Richmond Defences
The Outer Line Here stood part of the Outer Line of the Confederate defences of Richmond, built in 1862-64. On the right the line crossed Brood Road and ran north and south along the ridge where Emmanuel Church stands. On the left it extended four miles westward. Thence south to James River.
Historic markers are paragons of shorthand English, and this one is no exception. Plus, you have to love the way the scribe here brings the love for British spelling.
