Writing Snippet #14: Ghosted

“D you believe in ghosts?” 

The villain snorted at the hero’s question, skeptical, but before they could continue the hero said something that made them pause.

“You don’t?” The hero raised an eyebrow, arms folded. “I do. I see them all the time. Bet you thought I was some sweet little pixie, huh? Some Heliomancer?”

The villain faltered. Heliomancers controlled light. That was what they had assumed the hero was; a light-bender. They hadn’t really considered any option. The glass case that the hero was trapped in was full of synthetic darkness, made to repress Heliomancy.

“I believe in ghosts,” the hero said, stepping forward, to press their hands against the glass, “because they’ve been my best friends since I was a child.”

The shadows in the glass case started to swirl around the hero’s feet. It was then that the villain realised just how colossal their mistake was. 

Darkness smashed the glass to pieces, spraying splinters across the floor, and the villain put their hands up over their face; covering their head.

Gentle hands pried their hands away, and the villain cowered in fear before the hero who was kneeling in front of them, wreathed in dark fire with an army of transparent figures behind them.

The hero smiled, standing up. They stepped back. “I’m a Necromancer, not a Heliomancer. You should do your homework next time.”

For a moment, the villain thought that they were going to let them go.

Then the hero said, “They’re all yours, boys,” and the ghosts attacked.
