In action movies, people with trauma- and especially superheroes with trauma- are either A) acting out from that trauma, B) repressing that trauma, or C) fully recovered from that trauma.
And then we have Sam Wilson, who is seriously traumatized by being in war and rescuing people and losing Riley (and also from literally everything that’s happened since he met Steve Rogers), and isn’t all better, but is working hard to be better and even helping other people to get better. Not because it’s his responsibility to take care of other people, but because he’s a genuinely good person, and because it seems to help him too.
And as a result, Sam’s very EXISTENCE is a rebuttal of every awful trope of both masculinity and recovery, individually and combined. Sam gets to be a wonderful person who’s genuinely healing, and in a just world audiences would be aiming to be ore like Sam than like literally any other person in the MCU.
In conclusion, Samuel Thomas Wilson is the best person and I love him, thanks for coming to my TED talk.
