i head-canon Sam to be someone who genuinely struggles to relax and tries to max out his productivity to an unhealthy amount

First, before starting, this is my opinion and what I have analyzed from watching the MCU until phase four and watching the TFWS.

Second, yes I'm a sambucky shipper, BUT I also respect whoever ships stucky and understand their point of view. But I'm talking in a friendship way.

Sam is a better friend than Steve was for current Bucky. See how i used current Bucky??

For me, I feel like Steve was trying to bring back the old Bucky. Like, he was still viewing Bucky as the 40s one, and trying his best to incorporate that version of him in the present broken one. That's not being a bad friend, I can see that Steve was genuine about it. But it wasn't the right approach or method. The notebook also felt clinical, there's only so much you could do in a to-do list to heal from your trauma (which it didn't happen with Steve. Bucky got used to not being controlled by Hydra, but didn't heal from it.)

Besides we do have to admit, that no matter how much people glaze, Steve was also a selfish character in his own way, which makes him much more complex.

As for sam, he never met 40s bucky. He heard stories, but he never met him. He knows the current Bucky, broken and still healing from hydra, and that's makes all the difference, because here sam wants to help heal bucky, full stop, and allow bucky to choose what version he wants to be. Yes, sam has an advantage because before being the falcon he was helping veterans heal too, but let's see that has a superpower rather than an advantage. Bucky with sam healed to a different version of 40s bucky, but similar at the same time. Like the playfulness and the cheekiness is there, but there's also a raw maturity and reality check on him.

Steve couldn't have done this, for many reasons that also include his own character, but because what he wanted was to ctrl c ctrl v 40s bucky.
