Jaya Upadhyaya wrote : A series of mushroom domed pillars created by Kachari Kingdom in 10th C. It is not clearly known what they signify. They could be feats of achievements or had religious significance.

Most of them are crumbling due to negligence.

HERO STONES (VIRGAL) IN EKSAR VILLAGE, BORIVALI WEST, MUMBAI.

Where are they located? In the rapidly urbanizing village of Eksar, they are located in the compound of the posh Club Aquaria building. You can find them on the map here. 

A hero stone (Viragal in Marathi) is a memorial commemorating the honorable death of a hero in battle. Erected between the 3rd century BC and the 18th century AD, hero stones are found all over India. They often carry inscriptions displaying a variety of adornments, including bas relief panels, frieze, and figures on carved stone.Usually they are in the form of a stone monument and may have an inscription at the bottom with a narrative of the battle. One of the lowermost panels of these 4 hero stones, depicts a naval battle fought in 12th century CE by the Shilhara dynasty!

Typical hero-stone found in Kollur

A “Veeragallu” or hero-stone has been found at Kollur in Udupi district. It is a medieval hero stone dating back to either the 13th Century or 14th Century.

In a press release issued here on Monday, T. Murugeshi, Associate Professor in Ancient History and Archaeology, MSRS College, Shirva, said that the typical hero-stone was discovered at Kollur, a famous pilgrim centre of Shakti worship, by Muralidhar Hegde, junior engineer of Sri Mookambika Temple, who brought it to his notice.

The discovery is significant for the cultural history and antiquity of Kollur. Erecting memorial stones in honor of deceased ones was an ancient practice in the country. Read more.

Ancient hero stone with inscriptions unearthed

An ancient hero stone with inscriptions has been unearthed at Karattampatti near Thuraiyur, about 35 km from here.

The hero stone was discovered from a field at a village during a field study taken up by a research team led by Subash Chandira Bose, advisor for the archaeological wing of the Centre for Cultural Studies, Coimbatore, following a tip-off given by Durairaj, a local resident.

Mr.Bose, in a press release, said the bas-relief hero stone measuring 30 centimetres in width and 92 centimetres in height has been carved within a rectangular vertical frame with excellent craftsmanship. It depicts a warrior holding a sword in his left arm.

The inscription belongs to the 31 regnal year of Paranthaga Chola-I (AD 938), also known as Madurai Kondan, he said. Read more.
