Go alone to a ball, what a stupid idea this had been. Her husband had been too busy to go, having to leave for another kingdom at the last moment. Why should she be expected to go to a Masked Ball of all things without anyone to escort her? It made her look bad to go alone! But he had insisted that she go, for fear of insulting Snow White and Prince Charming. Or would they now be considered King and Queen? She was never quite sure of that, so much tug and pull between them and Queen Regina. She was sure they were King and Queen now, though she knew her husband’s loyalties lay with the old queen, as hers should as well. Narcissa was often one for the dark side, a family trait passed on from one witch to the next. It didn’t help that her husband had magic of his own, which made she and him both prime people to have on either side of the great battle between Snow White and The Evil Queen. It was clear which side they chose, though it was never spoken about publicly and they continued about as normal in political life.
So she did what was asked of her, going to the ball alone, both to keep them in good graces with the ruling family and in case any information should be passed to whom they believed to be the true ruler of this kingdom. She walked in unaccompanied, a golden mask upon her face to contrast her emerald dress. She felt pretty and hoped perhaps the lack of escort meant someone, anyone, might pay attention to her this evening, perhaps someone who might help her pretend she wasn’t trapped in a miserable marriage to a miserable man.
