...When your disguise is proved untrue When bitterness is overdue Feel sorry for yourself Is all you chose to show 'bout yourself When your disguise is proved untrue The end is near, the day is through Leave this world behind Your joyless ghost has made you blind.

"...And Don't Deliver us From Evil"
That’s the title of the recent release from Italian black(/doom/progressive rock[?]) metal band Forgotten Tomb. I’m currently on my second time through the record. My initial listen was very positive. I might be willing to say that it is my favorite of their full-lengths since “Love's Burial Ground”. Aside: That being said, I definitely like all 3 albums previous to "Love's Burial Ground” better than “...And Don't Deliver us From Evil” as well. So really we’re talking about “Negative Megalomania” and “Under Saturn Retrograde”. I’m very confident I like it better than “Under Saturn Retrograde”. “Negative Megalomania” is a close one because of songs like “A Dish Best Served Cold” (probably a top 5 favorite Forgotten Tomb track for me) and “Blood and Concrete”. Perhaps, this second time through will add some clarity. Aside of the Aside: Top 5 favorite Forgotten Tomb tracks (no order): “A Dish Best Served Cold”, “Love's Burial Ground”, “Daylight Obsession”, “Scars”, “No Way Out”.
The Opening section in the title track, wow. Herr Morbid is doing his thing……Well anyway, onward with the listening! PS: If you like long band names and/or grind, stay tuned for a cool(?) moment in my music appreciation life.
"Obscura Arcana Mortis"
One of my favorite bands, Forgotten Tomb, released an EP in 2000 called "Obscura Arcana Mortis". I now, happily, own this album. Let me explain my happiness....
When I first discovered Forgotten Tomb, one of the first songs I happened to download was "Nefarious Nights" (the 2nd track on "Obscura Arcana Mortis"). Last.fm states that I first listening to this track on February 3, 2008. I then, apparently, listened to the song five more times in 2008, and then once more, randomly, on Christmas of 2009 (it was probably on some random burned CD that I came across or something). So, to be clear, it has been a while since I heard this material (or well, "Nefarious Nights" anyway).
Around that time, we'll say, my fondness for Forgotten Tomb grew and grew. I started buying their albums. However, "Obscura Arcana Mortis" always evaded me (due to it's lack of availability - 215 copies in 2000, and 1000 copies upon it's re-release in 2007); sadly I was many years late to the party.
Eventually, I came to a point in which I had just accepted that it was an album that I never own (much like Shining's "Submit to Selfdestruction" EP - though at least I found a good download for that).
Anyway, last weekend I happened into my favorite local record store, Silver Platters in Bellevue, and just happened to come across this record on the rack. I was b.l.o.w.n. away. "Purchased", I said out loud to myself. I was giddy.
Later at home, I found out that it had been re-released again last year. However, that was neither here nor there, at that point. I was holding "Obscura Arcana Mortis" in my CDgreedy hands, and that's all that mattered to me.
As for the music itself, I like it. Obviously, it's an EP, so that mean less total time, but that's to be expected (thus, the use of "obviously"). I especially enjoy the first track, "Nightfrost", which may just be Forgotten Tomb's most aggressive song. I love the way the song just explodes at the beginning. Good stuff.
So yeah, thanks to Herr Morbid for getting this album re-released (and I suppose, for releasing in the first place)(and I suppose Silver Platters too, for carrying the re-release).
PS: On an unrelated note, Happy [belated] Birthday to Bruce Campbell!
