So uh I wrote that thing for Vagina Monologues & HerStories at my university. I threw it under the cut. I would appreciate any constructive criticism. It’s a 2-5 minute read. Thaaaankee

The girl I used to be was chastised constantly

“Young lady you stop that,”

“Sit still, keep your legs together,”

“Sit down! Stay quiet!”

That’s not very ladylike.

It left me wondering why it is that to be a lady is to be constricted.

Why can’t I play and jump and run like the other kids?

Why can’t I laugh and shout and be boisterous with my friends?

Why are the rules different for me because I have an innie and not and outie?

And WHY may I never share what it’s like to have this feat of evolution within me

When half the population has the same?

As I grew and the rules became tighter -

Too tight to breathe -

The chastising became more severe

Teasing became harsh looks and harsher words behind closed doors

Slaps on the wrist became slaps on the face

Because

I wasn’t ladylike enough

So I learned to sit down and stay quiet

And I kept my legs together until shame froze them there

Like stone

Now the person I am today

Be him a butch or a man

Is still unable to talk about my body-

first because I am a female

Then, because I am the wrong kind of female

One who does not identify within these suffocating constraints

Of “Ladylike.”

I may have a pussy but I am not a cat who will

Sit down nicely into your tiny little boxes.

But now that I’ve thrown out your boxes

I’m supposed to pretend that I didn’t spend my whole life

With the one labeled “woman” addressed to me?

Overnight I’m expected to detach myself from what’s inside me

From what has impacted my life so severely

Dysphoria makes me hate it, and now these expectations

(Simply because I, be I a butch or a trans man, am not ladylike)

Tell me to sit down and stay quiet for a whole new reason

I still, I STILL cannot love the parts of my body that create

Life

My vagina, self-cleaning and perfectly elastic,

Is too smelly, too “loose,” too wet, or too dry

My vulva, which includes the only organ designed

Exclusively for my pleasure,

Is too long, too large, too small, too hairy,

Too naturally healthy

My uterus, building an endometrial lining

As we speak - LIFE

They are perfect and powerful and self-sustaining

But with them inside me, can I sustain myself?

Sure I might be paid more

Attention in conversation

But will I be hired when I put the name, (casually redacted),

On my resume for their background checks and it comes back

With my crime of being born with these parts

I don’t even want.

Will I be able to sustain myself on the 80 cents

For every dollar my brothers make?

Now, this is just the start of it, a very small piece.

After the show I, be I a man or a butch,

Will go home remain silent

Gagged by society

Told to sit down

And stay quiet

No more.
