August 1966… Apollo 1 training The Apollo 1 astronauts pose before entering their Command Module spacecraft at North American Aviation, the firm that built the X-15 rocket-powered aircraft. Commander Gus Grissom, senior pilot Ed White and pilot Roger Chaffee wore a modified Gemini pressure suit which came with new environmental connections and a protective plastic shell over the plexiglass helmet visor. Note the crew wore NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster 105.003 chronographs without crown guards on long black velcro straps. After the January 27, 1967 tragic Apollo 1 Pad 34 fire the program was delayed for 20 months, allowing safety updates, including removal of flammable materials and a new capsule hatch.
