She knew those big sad eyes all too well that she knew when those eyes went down, everything else would too. The Doctor had answered the phone with such a joyful air, too; he'd greeted the other with an air of familiar nostalgia - "Ah, Captain Jack Harkness, fancy hea--" -- but he'd never gotten the chance to end that sentence. His eyebrows had furrowed and he started shaking his head, giving excuses of "No, no, no, it's more complicated than that. You know the rules as well as I do and-- "

HE DIDN'T DESERVE TO DIE, said voice at the other end of the line with such a force that even she heard it. Hesitant, she approached the Doctor and put a hand against his arm. The stranger wept on the other end of the line, muttering things about how he didn't deserve to die. Not again. Not like this. Not alone. Please, Doc. Just this once. If not for me, do it for him.

( There was a beat of silence. She stood by his side, helpless but hoping. )

Alright, said the Doctor. Alright, I'll do it. Clara took his hand in hers and looked to him. Confusion masked her eyes but she dared not ask in matters she knew he would resolve. Whatever this Jack was asking of him, he would do it. And it would be alright, like the Doctor said it would be. He'd do whatever clever thing he was thinking of and fix it. If he couldn't, well she knew he would give his life trying. Right then, scared of what was going to happen next but not once did she waver nor let go of his hand, she only looked with a heart that trusted far too much.

"Are you sure? I could always-- Okay. Okay. I won't. --I'll do it." Then he hung up the phone. Clara looked at the Doctor, expectant but wordless, and he squeezed her hand once. He looked at her for a second and smiled before he was off pushing buttons and toggling toggles once again, dancing about the console without the skip in his step. Focused is what he was and it took a total of two seconds before curiosity overtook her and she simply had to ask

❝ So what are we doing ? Who was that? What's going on? What's the plan? ❞

The plan? he'd said. WE'RE GOING TO SAVE A DEAD MAN'S LIFE.

Seeing a small tourist shop however, she smiled excitedly and hurried over to it, figuring she could figure out when and where she was the shop. As she came in, she heard a bell ding as she waited by the front desk for someone to get to her.
