Just to make the things straight (pardon the play of words), I am HETEROSEXUAL. A simple girl who likes boys. And when I see characters heterosexually affirmed changing their sexuality in tv series or movies for behind the scenes reasons, I become very angry. Everyone now seem to appreciate other sexualities than the principal one, the mosto normal one. Heterosexuals need to be respected and respresented as well sa other sexualities. Nowadays heterosexuals are treated as endangered species, but we are fundamental like any other. And I'm proud to be straight! ⚫⚪⚫⚪⚫⚪

Heterosexual Pride

A relative of mine shared the following on Facebook:

At first I rolled my eyes and let it go. Next I got a notification that my super-right wing aunt loved it, of course she did.

I ended up sending my relative this message:

Hi,

I'm commenting on your post about heterosexual pride month. I suspect you posted it tongue-in-cheek.

I’m not sure if you know that I’m gay. I’m sharing my reaction to the post in this DM.

The picture of the family with the umbrella blocking the rainbow colors, it's like saying that they need to be protected from LGBTQ people, and as a gay man, it makes me sad you'd think that.

While most of the world sees Pride as a rainbow-filled party, for queer people it’s pushing back against the negative messages we receive, affirming that we belong and have value, and a determination to be treated fairly and have the same rights as others.  

It's okay for people to have pride in their families and themselves, but the idea of heterosexual pride feels like it’s mocking gay pride. I don't know any country where it's ever been illegal to be straight, or a religion that taught you're evil if you're straight. Strangers don’t leer or make comments when a straight couple holds hands. You know what I mean? This idea of heterosexual pride month seems to be a reaction queer pride month.

As I said, I think you posted it in a sense of fun, I hope so. You can leave it up or take it down, but I wanted you to know how the post looks to someone like me.

Basically to be pro-straight is to be anti-gay, at least that’s what the image with the umbrella suggests. 

I don’t mind celebrating people, but somehow I doubt he celebrates Black people, you know what I mean? Plus, Black Lives Matter isn’t a “celebration,” there’s a point to it. Just as their is to Pride.
