NOVEMBER TRIBUTE - today as i have the privilege of enjoying a day off from work to observe yesterday’s holiday I think about the lessons of commitment and perseverance that my parents taught us. This picture is from the day my dad left the rehab unit at Mercy Medical. Up until his ALS diagnosis he worked extremely hard to regain movement in his legs to walk & stand independently. The rehab team often had to force him to rest. He was so determined and then his spirit was crushed by the news that it was a disease that would likely never allow him independence or mobility again. When we got him home he kept focused on beating the odds. He pushed himself with my mom by his side. Growing up my parents never allowed us to quit. If the coach didn’t “like” us or if we weren’t necessarily good at something-we had to stick it out. Meet our commitment for that year or season. My parents were the first to ask what we could have done better before they ever would have blamed our failure on someone else. Their philosophy was simple - the coach, the teacher, the adult was to be respected at all times. We could disagree but if we wanted a different outcome it was on us to get it. And they did not disrespect the coach either even if they felt some kind of way. We were taught that life is not always easy and nothing would be given to us freely. We learned that although second place or a B on a test was a good showing - it wasn’t the ultimate achievement. There were no consolation prizes in our house Bc they knew life didn’t work that way. We also learned that we each were good at different things. We each had limitations and strengths which taught us how to work as a team. I hope i passed this message on to @victoria_margarett Helping her understand that you get out of life what you put into it. That effort matters. And commitment & perseverance are the mark of a great person!! #alssucks #missmydaddy #hetriedhisbest #hejustwantedtowalk https://www.instagram.com/p/BqFJSr2hRN4EjjOn5uHFpmV3JHDMVEE-nlug5Y0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1x7774lj5un7j
