re: re-watching Nirvana in Fire

it has been some months since my last rewatch but Nirvana in Fire is the only show I have watched this many times.

and what i found is that with every rewatch i sympathize with another character and my understanding of a character deepens and changes the older i get.

granted, the first time i watched it was only in 2015 so not that much time has passed. but a lot of things have happened in my life and one rewatch i sympathize more with mei chang su’s cause, the loss and anger of marquis yan,  the drive and optimism of mu nihuang and most recently the way jingrui views and values friendship.

this is quite interesting to me as the closest comparison i have to this experience is growing up reading harry potter. but this time this process isn’t organic because the story doesn’t progress in step with the time that passes in the real world.

it only speaks to the superb writing of nirvana in fire that every character is layered enough for there to be several viewpoints of the story even when in the series itself we are introduced to the world through the eyes of mei chang su. it lets us explore the message and morals of this stories from different perspectives, making a re-watch not only entertaining but also informative.

Sometimes I imagine friends asking me about my favourite TV show and I’ll explain the greatness of NIF to myself in my head.

But when I actually get asked, I get too excited to form a coherent sentence ahahahaha

Thoughts on Mei Changsu - Lin Shu

Under a recent gif set I wrote that MCS was breaking character when he was patting Yujin. 

But thinking more about it I came to the conclusion that MCS can never break character because Lin Shu and Mei Changsu are still very much the same person. The only thing that sometimes happens is that he drops the facade of the calculating tactician and gives others a glimpse of his emotions.

There’s a lot of talk about Lin Shu being dead and Mei Changsu himself saying that Lin Shu died at Meiling. But he contradicts himself several times and in the end “revives” Lin Shu for his last battle. If Lin Shu really was dead then there would either be no reason for Mei Changsu to seek vengeance or at least no reason to feel so many emotions about those who are close to him. (Also his unchanged feelings for Jingyan speak volumes “You stop right there!”). And how he wants to pick up his bow at Jingyan’s manor.

At the same time adopting the identity of Mei Changsu is essential for his survival. First and foremost for him to literally survive, as Lin Shu is branded a traitor. But also for him to be able to live with himself. The name Mei Changsu is his protective barrier to not be reminded constantly of his losses. How he won’t be able to pick up a bow anymore. How he feels “like an iceberg roasted by fire” all of the time. How all of his family members are dead and his best friends don’t know and can’t know that he’s still alive.

The name allows him to create a fictional distance between the trauma he suffered as Lin Shu and himself.

If Lin Shu was not Mei Changsu Lin Chen would never have given in to him and  accompanied him into battle. He insists that he doesn’t care about Lin Shu and his cause and is only friends with Mei Changsu who he will keep alive at all costs. But in reality he knows very well that he’s a friend to both Lin Shu and Mei Changsu. Mei Changsu is Lin Shu growing into adulthood after suffering trauma (he was freaking 17 during Meiling) and Lin Chen doesn’t want him to die because he’s a good friend. So he has to give in and assist his friend on his suicide mission because he cannot talk him out of it (because he’s the best kind of friend). And the reason why he cannot talk Mei Changsu out of it is because Mei Changsu still is Lin Shu.

tl;dr: Mei Changsu is Lin Shu and I have a lot of feelings.

Hiatus

Ahahahahahah. So yeah, everyone might have noticed that I’m not that active atm and didn’t gif much of the first season. 

Real life crept up on me so I cannot put much content out here anymore. This might last for at least a year. I won’t be inactive but feel free to unfollow etc.
