So, after a year of patiently waiting, this finally arrived this week. Here is my own original Jamie Hewlett drawing from my 21st Century Tank Girl Pledge.
It may be small and incredibly goofy, but I can not tell you how important this fragment is to me. Jamie Hewlett IS the illustrator that made me want to become an artist. As a kid, I use to draw his stuff for hours, trying to master his style, understand his anatomy and nuances. His work was so incredibly unique, and from then on I had a desire to want to inspire others as much he has me.
Although I have now developed my own artistic voice and goals, 10 years later I can say that Hewlett’s influence is what got me to art school, kept me here and motivated and inspired to achieve my dreams.
Just having this drawing of his, something from his sketchbook of all things, is just something I would have never dreamed of years ago. No matter how silly or small, this is a fragment of a man’s creativity that has not only inspired myself, but hundreds of other artists. Although his inspiration does not necessarily need tangible form for me, it is still such a wonderful feeling to have a scrap of someone’s work who has significantly influenced me and so many others.
