it’s just me and the three other ellegaard fans against the world
maybe it’s just me but i hate it when people interpret scenes in a lot of addams family media as them hating normal people and hating the idea of anyone in their family being normal.
the above sequence is the main principle for the whole argument that they hate normal people and it’s just not true. the important thing to note about this whole scene is not that they hate how their baby has gone from being a black haired, brown eyed mustached baby to being a blond haired, blue eyed, baby with no mustache over night. they hate how said baby is ill and that is why he has become like that. they hate how they don’t understand what’s going on. it’s principle to note that in a great deal of adaptations at least one of the children they have has had a moment where they have been normal and they have been worried, not because they hate the child in question, but because they don’t understand it.
this sequence also shows that same idea except expanded on, while there is still not an understanding of why pubert is normal (except from the idea that he’s sick), the family is still catering to his likes and what he prefers (flowers, teddies, light colours and child friendly books). do they understand it and are they happy about it? no, but they care more about their family being happy than about him liking traditional american things.
additionally, it should be acknowledged that in the original show there is an episode where pugsley becomes normal and joins the boy scouts and the entire family caters for this and provides everything he wants. yes, they get a psychiatrist to try and find out if that is actually what he wants or he thinks that’s what society expects of him. obviously the psychiatrist gets the wrong idea and thinks that the gothic and macabre decor is them helping out, not the other way around, but the principle is important. they bought a great deal of stuff and equipment for pugsley because they wanted to support him even though he was behaving abnormally (in their standards (and normally in ours)).
the unfortunate thing is that now the standard iteration of wednesday addams, let alone her whole family, is that she (they) terrorise normal people for no reason. while this is out of character for the 1960’s iteration of wednesday addams, played by lisa loring, it’s not out of character for the original iteration drawn by charles addams. however, it should be noted that the 1991/1993 movies are inspired by the original sitcom and the cartoons, and netflix’s wednesday is based off the 90’s movies (just mentioned).
for wednesday, she herself has been regularly kind to normal people and even falls in love with and marries someone normal. she even recalls how she was taught to be kind to strangers, even if they are ‘strange’ (normal) by her parents, primarily morticia in the song “pulled” from the addams family musical.
this can be expanded on by seeing if non goths and goths (or alternatively the addams family) would date/get on… the answer is yes.

however, later on in the musical (halfway through act one) she tries to negotiate her family to be normal and try and help out her normal fiancé and his parents during the song “one normal night” and the whole idea there is that she is even ashamed of the family.
going back to the 1960’s tv show, morticia and gomez have normal people come to their house a lot of the time and it’s obvious they most of the time don’t care that they have a different lifestyle (unless they are explicitly rude to them about their likes) and even when people are being explicitly rude they still have no issue with them and appreciate seeing other people and their walks of life.
also, there’s an episode where gomez gets amnesia and the entire premise is that the family (especially morticia) still loves him and cares for him and wants what’s best for him even when he’s going in and out of episodes of being a stereotypical 60’s husband and father. while none of them like how he’s being normal (primarily because they’re used to him being the caring and supportive and loving patriarch of the family who would do anything for them), they still did everything they could to help him process everything.
it’s mentioned once and implied in the 1993 movie, ‘addams family values’ that they also don’t care that margaret is technically a normal person and was married to a normal person before marrying cousin itt and they still welcomed her in with open arms and would be more than happy to that with fester’s wife: debbie jellinsky because even though she tried to kill them and tried to seperate the family, they still welcomed her in and cared for her and even buried her in their cemetery after she died.
to conclude, this argument is quite sad and disregards a lot of medias that came prior to the wednesday show and should stop being mentioned.
