7 and 8 for the fic writing question meme!
Sorry for the delayed response!
I answered 7 here.
8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
The blunt truth is I usually don’t remember my stories well enough to recall favorite bits of dialogue. The “stories” I remember as having the most choice bits of dialogue in them are roleplay logs and.... I’m not wading through 300 pages of one singular rp for a line of dialogue I only half remember. So! I will give you my most recent favorite bit of dialogue from a current WIP cause that’s fresh in the old swiss cheese brain since I wrote it yesterday.
The paper was old and yellow, and the text on it faded from where it had been repeatedly creased and uncreased over the years. It was in French, but Thomas could make out the important parts. It was a death certificate for Comte Olivier de la Fere, dated 1665.
“My condolences,” Thomas said, for lack of knowing what else to say.
“There’s no need for that,” Madame de Winter said sharply, and Thomas looked up. Her face was cold. “He was the one who had me killed for daring to defend myself against his monster of a brother.”
“Ah.” Thomas folded the document carefully and passed it back. “He’s where he belongs then.”
I’ve included the paragraph above the dialogue for a bit of context. This is from my Grimjop Terror/Musketeers crossover fic and Old Guard AU.
I am fond of this dialogue for several reasons.
It is dunking on Athos, which is always good.
It cements the beginning of the Milady/Jopson friendship and given that this was not a planned scene, I’m pretty proud how plot important it turned out. I had initially planned to introduce Milady and have her meet Jopson in a very different way.
We get to see the faint edges of Murder!Jop that will be explored further later. He’s more than happy to see a shitty man six feet under.
