The Fugong Temple wooden pagoda, Ying County, Shanxi province, China, 11th century. The Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple in Ying County, Shanxi, is a landmark wooden pagoda built in 1056 under the Liao dynasty and expanded in 1195 during the Jin dynasty. Commissioned by Emperor Daozong at his grandmother’s ancestral home, it has survived numerous major earthquakes and became famous throughout China as the “Timber Pagoda.” Rising 67.31 metres atop a stone platform, it is the oldest fully wooden pagoda still standing in China.
