i like iris, but i don’t suggest aspen, unless you’re certain you’ll never be running after them screaming their name & might get cut off mid-sentence because you tripped. of course, you could be perfectly fine yelling “Ass!” in public, so your call.

It Was Always You

Freddie/Ada, attempt at backstory turned fluff. For Katy because my flail over this ship is entirely her fault.

He's ten years old when he sees her for the first time, the delicate girl in the pink dress who is not any kind of okay with watching on the sidelines while the boys play. Not that she does anything - not that she needs to, really. The bitter expression on her little face is a thing of beauty, and when he gets hit in the head with a ball because he's too busy staring, he's pretty sure no pain will ever be so sweet.

It's only later, when he learns the girl's identity, that Freddie realizes how completely and utterly fucked he is.

He keeps turning up, though, keeps having reasons to drop by that house every so often. Errands to run, the occasional favor to do for the family - the explanations are petty, more often than not, but they work. The stray with no one to look after him, the determined outsider - no one asks beyond that.

Well, no one except the girl. Ada's a determined young thing, and what she lacks in size, she makes up for in personality. She sees him trying not to look at her one afternoon when they run into each other in a shop and asks, point-blank, "Why me?"

He has never been so blindsided. A dozen good answers come to his mind later, but the first that comes out is "Because you are perfection incarnate."

Because clearly saying that to a girl whose brothers could kill him and make sure no one ever asked questions is the best idea he's ever had. But she smiles and, after checking to make sure no one's looking their way, darts forward and presses her lips to his cheek. "Maybe," she whispers. She is sixteen, he is nineteen, and all is well with the world.

The war happens a month later. The war, yanking him away from everything he knows and the girl who should've been his. The war, five long years that leech everything good out of the boys he's known for most of his life. They become men out there, watch their brothers die, absorb horrors and fight back in all the ways they know how. He finds solace in political books, in idealism, in making plans to fight back if he survives this hell - and, in secret, in writing letters. There is no mention of war, only hopes and dreams and somedays. In return, he receives missives of the mundane, and never has he been so thrilled to hear of someone's cat falling out a fourth-floor window. The world outside goes on, and in her way, the girl anchors him.

When he gets back, she is a girl no more. Twenty-one, with hair cut short and an impish grin, she wastes no time pulling him into an alley and kissing him with lips like fire. "You missed me," she laughs as he gasps for air.

"You're too good for this," he can't help but say, and she is. Too good for a love affair in alleys and spare rooms, too good for a man who can't tell the world he loves her above all else for fear of what will happen, too good for...

And then she's kissing him again and he can just tell, as their bodies press together, that she doesn't care that he's a throwaway boy who's determined to change the world through any means necessary. Just as he's wanted her for far too long, she's wanted him as well. "And I'm done with waiting," he whispers as he undoes her blouse. He's done with so many things, but with her, he's just beginning.
