having thoughts of cannibalizing a chicom chest rig for pockets and reinforcement on a pair of jeans for work. what areas would you recommend i consider for increased protection and/or useful positioning of the separated magazine pouches?

hmm, this might not be the most helpful answer but idk if grafting chicom pouches to another article of clothing would be very plausible or practical, i’m afraid.

At least in my experience, because of the way they’re constructed, when you remove one of the pouches you won’t really get a spare part that would transplant easily. Especially on either of the two grenade pouches closest to the mag compartments you have to completely tear off one seam fold. You’d have to deconstruct it further, resize it a little, and then iron another fold, and at that point you might as well have started with base fabric.

Tbh i think the better option for work would be to leave the pouches intact and modify it into a bag or belt sorta like one of these:

For the former, you could just chop off the wings and sew on a new strap or rings to clip one on. For the latter, you wouldn’t even have to keep the full bulk of the rig like the example I found (which i think is an Iraq war bring-back). You could again chop off the sides and sew some belt loops onto the back of the center panel for some sort of field-expedient carpenters tool belt. A satchel or bag would also keep the weight of whatever you’re carrying from pulling on your jeans all day, too.
