I've discussed it before, but I think it was a great narrative choice to make Carmilla's murder of the exorcist be for her daughters. It makes it so the angels have no recourse- what else is purer than a mother caring for her children?- and inspires confidence in hell’s kindness over heaven’s.
Because like. They'd feel justified if it was done for literally anything else. Survival for survival isn't a good enough reason for the angels. To bring murder to Heaven means it has to be for good reasons, and they just assume Hell was fucking around or someone did it specifically to spite war- but it wasn't. It was a mom and her two daughters.
And that's not enough for the angels, sure. But it makes a great case for why souls should have second chances. Which is the point of the show.
