After Nydia Velázquez became the first Puerto Rican woman to be elected to the United States Congress in 1993, she spoke to @npr‘s Crossroads about her experiences growing up in Yabucoa, PR, and her lifelong commitment to education.   

Crossroads was a weekly newsmagazine that examined America’s cultural and social diversity. NPR broadcast the program from 1989 until 1995.

In 1982, @npr spoke with Franklin Chang-Diaz, one of the first Hispanic Americans to fly in space. Of Latino and Chinese descent, Chang-Diaz grew up in Costa Rica and dreamed of one day becoming an astronaut. He joined @nasa in 1980 and participated in seven space missions. During his first space shuttle flight in 1986, Chang-Diaz addressed people around the world in a Spanish-language broadcast delivered live from space.

In 1982, NPR distributed a teen-oriented series called Checking it Out. The half-hour bilingual newsmagazine explored music, sports and other issues of interest to teenagers. One episode featured an interview with internationally renowned guitar maker Lorenzo Pimentel and his family. Pimentel learned to make guitars by hand as a teenage apprentice in his native Mexico, a skill he brought with him when he emigrated to the United States in 1951 and shared with his children. Today, his family still continues to craft fine handmade guitars.

Sept 23, HHM daily sketch day 9. DUENDE. In the latest episode of Elena of Avalor they introduced the Duende to the magical Latin American kingdom. The term Duende originates in Iberian (Spain and Portugal) latin American, and Filipino folklore. Basically an influence from Spain and Portugal that carried over during their imperialism. It is a word used overall to describe the fae folk and elves, similar to the English word sprite. The Duende are more known for thier goblin like attributes. (Culture) – For those of us who grew up in Mexico and other Latin American countries, El Santo, el enmascarado de plata was as  familiar as cookies with Café con Leche. The wrestler who always covered his face with a silver mask, and who humanized “Lucha Libre” (wrestling), would have been 99 years old on September 23, 2016.

In recognition of 1979’s National Hispanic Heritage Week, @npr produced a special Spanish-language interview with activist and entertainer Pedro J. Gonzalez. He emigrated from Mexico to Los Angeles in 1923; while working as a manual laborer he discovered a talent for singing. Gonzalez began performing with Los Madrugadores, and hosted an early morning Spanish-language radio show, one of the first in the United States.

Gonzalez was interviewed by Hector Morales, the host of Enfoque Nacional, NPR’s first Spanish-language newsmagazine.
