Annnd Carnival of Chaos comes to an end. What’s your thoughts overall to this season?
Looking back at my predictions, I was right about the things between Anastasia and Marissa, and Lynda. (Even if Lynda was eliminated shortly afterward) But I also thought Logan would be the first one getting voted off which doesn’t age well at all. (And the fact he only received two votes in Episode 24 is impressive honestly)
I am very happy I choose to root for Isabel before the season started since my track record for rooting for a character not always great. (When TD reboot’s cast was announced I was rooting for Chase…)
hi!!! we made it to the end of another season!!! it's so wild that this has practically been My Entire Year's Experience. just stressing over these silly lines on my screen... so like every other experience i have with these shows-
i'll always be happy i picked jade as one of my favs from the start. i'm so proud of her and she's really grown to be my overall fav of this series. and congrats on your correct predictions + early rooting choice! very funny that logan was your first elim pick though considering... yeah 😭
as always, i will ramble under the cut to save most of you. beware of my spoiler filled rambles. they're a doozy. (the tldr: 7.5/10 season, might change it to an 8 or 8.5 when i calm down due to the finale, generally fun season overall):
okay so it hurts to rate the season a 7.5/10 because for the majority, it was a solid 9/10. just. ugh. when this season was good, it was SO GOOD. i was there for most premieres, scared out of my mind about who would leave next. i even shoved my GAD in a corner and braved twitter for this show! then the second half of post-merge happened and just... idk if it's recency bias and my thoughts will change after a rewatch, but my heart is saying 7.5/10 for now. so.
full blown explanations. because why not. bear with me though because i don't remember everything; it's been a long year and i'm not gonna rewatch this anytime soon lol.
Things I Liked:
Voice Acting— this vocal cast is oh so dear and perfect to me. they brought these characters to LIFE. it feels special in their case because this is the first i got to see little tidbits of their personality through the casting call before their voices were chosen. and you can tell how much they all care for these characters based off the improv lines, character analysis, and thank you messages they'd post on twitter. idk i just love dc4 cast so so sooooo much. thank you to the vocal cast and vocal directors and everybody for making me feel like this 😭💕 (and PLEASE check out the lovely q&a stream most of the vocal cast participated in recently if you can! you can see how much they adore these characters. warms my heart and i'm only like a quarter way through so far. plus extra lore!! so so so good!!!)
The Character Cast— MAN. i knew from the start i'd adore them. and even though the road got super bumpy, and its filled with potholes, and some of the asphalt ain't all there, i still find myself holding these characters close to my heart. definitely my favorite cast overall. at some point, i cared about everyone's story, even for just small moments (yes, even spencer. holy moly. lucky bastard got an emotion out of me). they all felt so human! it was so nice! dc4 cast please come back, i'll miss you forever 😭😭😭
Behind the Chaos—this is one of the best new editions this show has included. while i don't like that the thumbnail essentially spoils which character got out (it ruins the fun if you're first finding it in a playlist imo), i still really enjoyed this segment. this was the perfect thing to do with emily: have her host this, then have her help with the main show, then have her host all on her own (so she can take it over for good... yes queen, save us from trevek........). and getting to know more about every character was so fun! i feel like alessio is the best first elim this show has ever had and a big part is because of his interview. and zaid's interview was so fucking good like i revisit it a lot (LOL i loved angry zaid). i really do think dc (and a lot of shows like these as a whole) can benefit from segments like these, from post interviews to reunions. so big kudos to whoever came up with this idea!!!
Jade and Isabel— i'm not gonna ramble about this one cause we'd be here all day. just look at me go at it for months on end in this thread. i think that sums it up well enough. best duo ever and i don't even think the writers were trying to do this on purpose. it's just. they solo heavy (to me). they made this year fun and i'll miss them. me and holywater vs the world...
Things I'm Mixed About:
Trevek— this isn't even that big a deal at all, loved that trevor and derek weren't as present in this season because that was one biggggg critique i had for the last one. just. man. i'm a hater LOL. what do you mean the guys who were apart of a deforestation plan, including one guy who pulled a gun on some officers, got to get out of prison and be promoted to executive producers for a fairly successful show. justice is NAWT served in this universe at all. UNFREE THEM </3 ("but scin you're a fan of emily and fiore and-" shhhh! let me be!)
Length— I HAD FUN FOR THE MOST PART. but. this season was so damn long. i remember being so excited at first, but once i got to the end, i was drained beyond belief. i don't think we needed every plot we got; some cuts could've been made here and there. but eh. still had a relatively good time. lots of new things to see. can't really hate the length that much.
The Jury Roundtable— i LOVED the concept of the jury. i LOVED that we got the chance to hear the jury's opinions about the final 4. i thought it would be such a fun and messy addition to this show. but i felt like that jury roundtable ep was so... safe... in a way...? like why is piping hot tea not being served right now? this is the perfect time to REALLY get to know who they're voting for or against. let's get a lil more disrespectful guys! i wanted better arguments! and why the heck was spencer and natalia so nice?!?! yall supposed to read these people to filth the MOST like cmon... not to mention most of them glazed logan soooo much like BOO TOMATO BE MEAN TO HIM, IDC IF HE'S POPULAR, THIS IS A JURY ROUNDTABLE...
Marissa— gosh. breaks my heart to put her here. but her writing was... iffy to me. don't get me wrong, i liked the concept of a woman raised by military parents in a military family growing to not want to really do that in the end. breaking yourself away from what's viewed as a family tradition is a huge thing! but i feel like i don't know her all like that. as much as i enjoyed watching anastasia (she is messy in such a fun way), i was kinda hoping that marissa would get developed more away from anastasia, especially after winning that returner challenge. maybe marissa could have interacted with other campers more outside of anastasia? we'd get to see new sides of her we never got to see much, similar to her outburst during that auction challenge? but then marissa... leaves again before any of that can really happen...? i know every character can't possibly be fully developed in shows like these (and i don't want them to be; you gotta find balance somewhere), but idk she felt lackluster. to me. marissa please come back someday; i find you too interesting to let go of-
The Theme of Hypocrisy— I LOVE HYPOCRISY. i don't think anyone in this world is immune to it, and i think it can be highlighted so well in shows like these, where your decisions can and will get called out. it's the main reason why i like thinking about the small anastasia vs lynda feud; anastasia was QUEEN hypocrite this whole game and it was funny to hear her say she's "nothing like lynda." like ms girl, you're a lilllll grimey like lynda is and i think that's ok lol. zaid vs isabel was also plenty fun! toying with hypocrisy and tying it with morality, specifically in a religious lens? that's good stuff. to me. but as much of a highlight as this theme was, i don't think they dove as deep into it as i wanted them to with certain duos? like with zaid and hannah. ugh it was a PERFECT setup for more hostility and anger, but then zaid gets eliminated and it fizzles out! i was the edge of my seat for his interview, wanting more of that!! i think it would have been perfect to really dive into zaid more, especially because he wasn't attached to ivy or tristain's hip at that time and had to interact with other contestants. and with hannah moving all on her own after losing many of her closest friends, she started making moves that pre-merge hannah would NEVER do. hypocrisy central come back... you could've been so great... the missed tension of it all... (this actually kinda brings me to the final section of this)
Things I Didn't Like:
Missed Tension Opportunities— they genuinely had it all this season. they had the recipe for more hostility and toxicity. i wanted messiness served on a silver platter. but all i got were quick ass apologies and hugs and whatnot. those are ok sometimes, but it loses its weight if it happens too much. i think it's necessary for characters to Not Get Along With Everyone. the most recent example is in the finale. for a show that claimed they didn't want the all stars finale to end up like "friendship camp" with a tess vs ashley finale, they sure... gave that....... in general really... but especially with the finalists................. i actually got why logan was mad at jade (i ENCOURAGED it even!), but i wanted him to be mad at anastasia too for providing that info as a game move rather than as a concerned friend! but no, logan becomes anastasia's friend again! and then logan forgives jade in the last ep before the challenge even starts!! where tf is my tension?!?!?!?! this game is supposed to have stakes and lasting impact, both good AND bad. otherwise it's kinda bland. to me. too much friendly competition BLOWS; let them duke it out sometimes and KEEP THAT NEGATIVE ENERGY.
The Romantic Plots— omg. i thought it was just me going "ugh so many romances," because i do that when there's like. three pairings LOL (being on the aro spectrum is funny). but when one of my mutuals pointed the below out, i was gagged. like yeah. yeah! we did NOT need this many pairings explored within the one season! look!!!!!
i'm all for a good romance. and if they wanted, they can do a love island animated spinoff. it'd be so fun and messy (someone please pick up this idea btw). but when you add too many romance plots into a competitive survival show this much, it's just... so tiring...... i'm also being extra nice by not diving into how strange it is that there's only two specific people in this whole cast with no romance mentioned in the show. i'm being EXTRA nice here.
Fuckass Episode 26— multiple days later and i'm still saying "what the fuck was that." because what the fuck was that. i think this might be not only my least fav ep of this season, but one of my least fav eps in the entirety of this show. i could probably write a super long rant on why i didn't like it. if you want. but to summarize, the challenge was boring, the way logan won was so ridiculous that it made me scream, i hated how they ended both logan and jade's separate arcs, the scenes after the challenge just pissed me off even more (especially the zaid + logan one), and i internally cheered when they closed the doors to this cursed carnival. not to mention this was the very first finale ever where i grew to detest a finalist... and that finalist just had to win... ouuu logan bell you're going straight to hell (but you're a millionaire so you wouldn't be the first of your kind to go there i suppose).
Logan— yeah actually i'm not done with this guy LOL. it's so wild for me to make this an entire point on its own because i started the season really liking him. but his writing made him so insufferable to me. there were so many times where i said "i don't care dude just get off my screen." you can tell he was on screen too much when you see how many lines he has (607) in comparison to the other finalists (anastasia - 558; jade- 479). he's just so greedy for plots. and i too have imposter syndrome. i get what it's like to doubt myself, even with accolades and awards under my belt proving otherwise. at first i liked the whole "hiding he won bronze at the olympics" plot, too, before it kinda disappeared. for whatever reason. but when you have this sweet character and the narrative absolutely refuses to have any other character dislike him, it just gives favoritism in the worst way possible. i don't care if he's some popular golden sunshine boy. someone can dislike him and the messy ass moves he made in this game and i think that'd be ok! preferred even!! please let him have flaws that others stay clashing with, just like every other finalist!!!! not to mention that i don't even think they handled his imposter syndrome right at all. instead of solving his internal issues and showing that hey, the podium for the olympics is a HUGE deal and making it this far in dc is a HUGE deal and losing is NOT that big a deal because he's somewhat grown as a person despite everything thrown at him, they just... don't. he wins. they didn't give him proper reflection or growth. and then they end his arc with an "we cool" to zaid and a flirt line to hannah about... pb&j's... like wrap it up IMMEDIATELY.
there's definitely more things i don't like, such as certain Biases and Decisions the onc writing team seem to still struggle with again and again. don't get me wrong, there has been some tremendous improvement over the years, but i still find myself wary... i'm watching you onc...... in the meantime, i do recommend that you read this document because a lot of my opinions regarding the black characters in this series along with others lie here, and with updates for it coming soon, i think it's super important to see where black fans are coming from when it comes to our representation.
but uh yeah. that's all i got. for now. so yeah. 7.5/10. this season is a complex mix for me because while it's technically my fav and while i still have big love for this cast and most of this story, i can't help but frown at some of the writing decisions made. it leaves such a sour taste to my mouth because like. how the hell did we get HERE 😭
nevertheless. i did enjoy my time watching this. i've had many fun convos on twitter, in discord calls, and my work Teams chat about this season, and i'm trying to focus more on the Good than the Bad. idk how s5 will be (or if i'll even be excited enough to watch it all the way through), but i'm still holding out hope that it'll be good throughout. all i can do is Hope when it comes to this show pfft-
