Shadows twist and turn, footsteps near and withdraw, they’re moving in circles, pulling closer and being pulled further like a moonlight’s ebb and flow, never quite meeting, never quite avoiding, yet, the chase persists.

Like mouse and like cat; like cat and like mouse. But at this point of the game, it was hard to tell who was who.

Laura swiftly dodged obstacles, Alison smoothly jumped over them. Dazzler’s perfume was immutable, Wolverine’s heartbeat was impossible to ignore.

They moved in tandem, in sync, avoiding yet pursuing, knowing very damn well how this will end tonight as soon as they —

“Oh, hey,” Laura said, and Alison turned her head immediately, catching sight of the other woman stalking out of the shadows.

“Hey yourself,” Alison’s smile was as light as Laura’s tone and the ease in the air, as if the two hadn’t spent the last several minutes hunting each other down, only to just — simply not raise their plastic-neon guns now that they were face to face.

“How’s it going?” the blonde asked, leaning against the cushion wall.

Laura stepped closer. “Not bad. How about you?”

“Bad!” Alison let out a laugh, sweet and serene and soft. “Half of my team went down in the first ten minutes, and I think the rest shot themselves in the foot — literally.”

The glow of their vests cast vivid hues while noise of the world outside blurred out, leaving only the two of them in this little corner of the pretend battlefield, hanging out as if the timer wasn’t blinking and blaring above their heads with an ominous pace.

The brunette shook her head, the corners of her lips curling up. “Throwing your friends under the bus already? Tsk, tsk, Dazz.”

“No! I mean— I didn’t mean it that way,” Tongue-tied, Alison sheepishly tucked her hair behind her ear. “You know what I really meant, Laura.”

“Do I?” Laura countered, arms crossed as she tilted her head.

God, she was so—

“I think you do,” Alison couldn’t help the glimmer in her eyes. “You’re just dancing around it.”

“I think,” Laura said, her gaze never wavering. “We’re both dancing around something but never getting to the point.”

“Oh?” Alison leaned closer, her voice dropping. “And what would that be, Wolve?”

Dwindling inches apart, the beats of two hearts became one; a thunderous rhythm. Green eyes locked on blue ones; a dazzling grin in contrast to a subtler one.

And before either of them cared to think about it, before either of them could process who was leaning first and who was closing the gap, it happened:

Their lips met, soft and slow, so sudden yet ethereally, senselessly soulful.

Right then, in that very moment, nothing beyond mattered anymore; the scoreboard, the timer, the gun in her hand that Alison loosened her grip on without a second thought— without even the first thought, just letting her arm lower the weapon by her side as she sighed into the kiss, melting into the daydream like this was her point of ascension.

But before Alison’s hands could instead reach up to cradle Laura’s face like it was the most precious thing she ever held and beheld, Dazzler heard herself losing before she saw it.

BEEP.

“What—”

A flicker of blue.

“the—”

AND BLUE TEAM WINS! CONGRATULATIONS, CHAMPIONS!

“FUCK,” Alison staggered back, the sheer incredulity in her eyes overshadowed only by something that resembled wanting to let out a laugh, because truly, what and when and how the fuck?

“Hello?!” Dazzler gaped at Laura, only prompting her grin to widen and her chuckles to frequent. “I— Seriously? Did you have to—? We were having a moment!”

“And I had my opportunity,” Laura retorted, teasing. “You made it too easy, Al. You’re too quick to lower your guard.”

“Yeah, ‘cause it’s only for you,” Alison murmured, right before they were swarmed by their friends.

When I was in this play back in high school, my bestfriend was in the audience and he started doing these stupid shit that had me cracking up. So basically, I started dying of laughter in the middle of my play (: My face got so red and I thought I was going to die.
