So... Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution 1.

I feel like I was given a big “fuck you” by the people who made this movie. It’s an hour and 32 minute long recap episode that fails miserably as a recap episode. It’s a narrative mess; the story jumps all over the place after the first act, which are newly animated scenes that doesn’t really go anywhere. For the uninitiated, it’s gonna make absolutely little to no sense.

What I don’t get is the intent; the intent of the creatives and the movie itself-- what is this setting up? They had an hour and a half to set up a proper prequel to the series, but that’s not what they did or plan to do, according to the preview for Hi-Evolution 2. Until the sequel drops, I can’t help but think that this was a waste of my time.

If they plan on expanding Charles’ and Ray’s story going forward, it could possibly mean ignoring everything that came after their arc in the series. Which seems to be the case, ‘cause what the fuck did they do with Anemone in that preview? I’m getting an Evangelion 2.0 vibe, in the sense that the story is starting to diverge from an already set path in order to create a new story. I’m okay with that; I just wish THAT was the movie I just watched.
