You know, thinking about genre deconstruction a lot right now, I cannot help but think about how the idea of a "mecha deconstruction" is kinda silly. Like, people talk a lot about how Evangelion is a deconstruction of the genre. But it isn't really. Not because Evangelion is not deconstructing anything, but because it is still very much just Mecha, as Mecha as a genre is basically inherently a deconstructed genre.
Like, everything we call Mecha today is technically all part of the Super Robot genre. Specifically it is the Super Robot anime that are inherently deconstructing the standard Super Robot stuff. But because most Super Robot stuff is somewhat forgotten, we only have the deconstruction over.
Because, like... Gundam 79 was already a deconstruction of the genre. It was already: "Okay, but really, it would mess up a teenager if they had to pilot a war machine during actual war." That was always what Mecha was.
Thinking about deconstruction this just is so clear. Because generally speaking Evangelion does not do things necessarily that different from other traditional Mecha stuff. My first Mecha was Eureka Seven, something that also deconstructed. And I also remember the other shows that were out during my teenage years. RahXephon and Full Metal Panic were on that train as well.
And it is kind of weird.
I was not aware of this until I watched Gundam from the start last year. But it makes for an interesting and fascinating genre.
