Sara let out a short laugh at that, one corner of her mouth pulling upward. "Any man?" she repeated, glancing at Nettles. "I think women are just as guilty." She nudged a loose stone with the toe of her boot and watched it tumble away. "I've seen sensible people do foolish things for less than love. For pride. For ambition. For a chance at something they wanted." Her shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "At least love gives them a better excuse." The words settled between them for a moment before Sara looked back at her companion.
"Though I suppose you're right. Love does make fools of people." There was amusement in her voice, but something quieter underneath it. "The strange part is that most of them seem willing to be fools again the moment they're given the chance." Her smile widened slightly. "Maybe that's how you know it's real. If someone can see exactly how ridiculous they're being and decide it's worth it anyway."
