I'm from Canada and I've only heard the Pledge of Allegiance maybe once or twice in my life, but you said it's really creepy? What parts did you find really creepy?

So for anyone who doesn’t know this is the Pledge of Allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Now, the thing that’s creepy about it isn’t exactly the wording of it(though I do have problems with that too, dont even get me started on “Under God”) Its the fact that from kindergarten on children, that have no idea what it means or why they are saying, it are forced to basically pledge that they love america, that its the best country, and that they will stand by it their whole lives.

Now I mean the Pledge doesn’t really mean anything if we don’t want it to and the Supreme court actually ruled that kids don’t have to say it if they don’t want to and cannot be punished for not doing it, but really, at least in my school I was the ONLY kid who refused to say it and it does kind of ostracize you. Its just accepted as something normal and if you don’t do it you can get questions like, “What do you hate America or something?” which can further label you as an outcast.

In my opinion children, especially ones who can hardly even read yet, are WAY too young to be Pledging their Allegiance to ANYTHING and making them do it is just…creepy. If we live in a country of free speech then our children should be free to develop whatever opinions that they want to about America, in fact our founding fathers believed it was important for people to have opinions, especially negative ones, about America, because that leads to change. But our culture has also developed this…mindless love for all things American and everything we do which is really bad. You should be critical of your country’s actions and not just mindlessly follow and support everything. Sadly, that is what a lot of people here do. There is this ideal (mostly supported by the republican party) that believes that America is perfect, we should all love it, the Constitution(a document that was made to be changed) is perfect and that we should all worship it ect…In fact, most school curriculum actually supports this as well even into high school. We are taught to love America, about how its the hero of the world and stuff like that. The first time I had a history teacher that actually showcased all of the shitty things my country does and pointed out that we should be critical of that WAS 10th GRADE.

Anyway, I feel like making children say the pledge(and I say ‘making’ because most children don’t actually know that they don’t have to say it and it is never presented as an option) But by making them do it it supports the idea that we should mindlessly love and follow our country no matter what, and that’s creepy and wrong and borderline brainwashing. We should teach our children to want to FIX America’s flaws, not to love it and ignore them.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just have strong feelings about this.

(Also just adding that the pledge isn't true. Liberty and justice for all? Please.)
