The majority of my food intake is healthy, but when I'm in LA, I'm drawn to an old haunt from my early days. Apple Pan's Hickory Burger hits the spot and brings back happy memories. It still tastes like it did back in the day.
The restaurant, opened in 1947, is one of Los Angeles' oldest continuously operating restaurants. If you are in LA or plan on visiting soon, they are located at 10801 West Pico Boulevard, near Westwood Blvd.
Also, their pies are spectacular!

Houston's Review
Long had the acclaim for the high-end casual American restaurant chain Houston's built up in my mind before I finally caved and ventured to the Riverside Square Mall to see what all the hype was about. We ventured into the dark enclave of the bright (and expensive) mall, and were greeted by an approximate wait time of one half-hour. The atmosphere of the restaurant was certainly buzzing amongst couples, families, and patrons at the bar watching the Yankees game.
Thirty minutes for some quality food didn't seem too bad, nothing that a few rounds of Words with Friends couldn't fix.
Alas, soon enough, the three of us were seated comfortably at a table for four. Our waitress immediately appeared with water, and, for the rest of the night, it appeared as if she had us in her omniscient eye, because as soon as any of our glasses neared being empty, she seemingly appeared to top us off.
The decor is dark and the lighting isn't great, perhaps not the best venue for a casual meal with friends, but rather a more intimate date.
When it came time to order our meals, our table prepared to receive two Hickory Burgers, and one Famous French Dip Au Jus Sandwich (the burgers and sandwiches, along with salads, are fall under the most reasonably priced area of the menu. Some of the more exclusive cuts of steak and ribs run upwards of $30, while our meals ranged in price from $14 to $18. Interestingly enough, the waitress also asked which sauces (mayonnaise, mustard, or ketchup, or a combination of any or all of the previous) for French fry dipping.
The food arrived rather speedily, and in terms of bang-for-your-buck, all of our entrees appeared to be worthy contenders, sandwiches with meat and toppings piled high, and also escorted by a decent portion of fries.
