It was a warm, sunny, evening at the Sunlife Stadium, April 2nd (2011) to be exact. I was there to see the guy from my high school in Virginia play- 3rd baseman for the Mets, David Wright. I arrived early and took my 3rd row seat right behind 3rd base. I waited for the baseball players to come out and start practicing. David Wright came out, and my eyes were hooked on him. This was not the first time I had seen him- he spoke at Hickory Middle school when I was in 6th grade and also came to a few of the football games. I got as close to him as I could, right above the dugout, and waved around my Hickory High School gym shirt that read “HICKORY HIGH LOVES #5 DAVID WRIGHT” because I knew that would recognize it since he wore the same gym shirt when he went to school there. I waited to see if he would notice me. He did. After he was done practicing, he walked over to the dugout and threw me something. “What’s that, a tshirt?” I thought. Nope. Batting gloves. I got David Wright’s batting gloves, at my first major league baseball game ever. He also signed my tshirt. It was hard to pay attention to the rest of the game, considering the significance of what had just happened. But that night, the Mets beat the Marlins. And that was easily one of the best nights of my life, one that I will never forget.
