Hi-Fructose Vol. 15 cover artist James Jean will debut new works in a solo show at Tokyo’s Hidari Zingaro gallery on November 7th. His latest body of work consists of mixed media drawings on paper and a large painting on copper plates. The show title, “ZUGZWANG”, derives from a term used by chess specialists to describe a situation in which a player is forced to make a move to his disadvantage. It’s also a term that Jean has used to describe his creative process, where the more he draws, the more he feels compelled to continue working.

Nakano Broadway - Hidari Zingaro and Bar Zingaro

Takeshi Murakami's gallery, Hidari Zingaro, is housed inside Nakano Broadway. There is one gallery space on the 2nd floor, with the main gallery on the 3rd floor, and some more galleries featuring more ceramics and pottery on the little known 4th floor of the building.
There's also a cafe, called Bar Zingaro, which was a collaboration with the stylish Norwegian cafe-bar brand Fuglen. The coffee shop is towards the back of the building on the second floor - original cocktails and bottled craft beer is also served at the cafe, while coffee is typically a light/medium roast by Fuglen. Cold drip is also served. Visit their website to have a look at the menu and other seasonal offerings.
Check out their Facebook page for some weeknight events (such as sake tasting). Since part of the cafe's target market are English-speaking residents most of the staff speak English and you're sure to bump into a couple of expats or exchange students during an event night.
