Sneak peek of what I’m working on. Maybe I was a hummingbird, because I’m so little (5, 3”) and my fluttering heart seems to be too big for my body. So I’m trying to tie these dynamic Trochilidaes into a heart shaped opalescent prism of light beams. Meditating on how my favorite artists illuminate the dark corners of who we are by recognizing both our strengths and weaknesses. Art unites our exterior and interior worlds, shows us that we are more alike than unalike, and fosters compassion, understanding and spiritual growth. Changing the narrative from that of fear and emergency; motivating each other to open our eyes to beauty, and wonder. After all, we are emotional creatures who define who we are by what we know through the stories we tell. I listened to a #hiddenbrain podcast this morning and a sermon on Sunday that seemed to converge on this Ertz quote. In the podcast, the psychologist Sheldon Solomon recounts an epic story where a man stumbles upon lamenting creatures who he later learns are immortal humans. When he encounters Homer - Homer shares that the reason for his lament is that ”If you live forever it's impossible to write the Odyssey at least once.” In other words, it may be precisely because we are physically mortal that we have reason to move, act and create while we are here. In the sermon, my pastor, @jennlwilliams recounted a story of reclaiming a rainy day and capitalizing on the unexpected ”margin” in her life, that day she chose, not to lament as Homer did, but to play and create lasting generation-spanning memories with her kids and husband- perhaps another kind of immortality was tapped that day? The immortality of living on in memory. Can I Buy Your Kidney?

It’s always a fun time for learning over at NPR. One of my favorites is Hidden Brain. It’s general premise is a look at what makes people do the things we do, and think the things we think, scientifically speaking.

This episode was a fun one. Should it be legal to sell your organs? Everyone generally agrees you own your body, and should have agency over what happens to it, but for some reason you don’t have a say over selling what you own.

Most countries have made selling your organs illegally. One country in the Middle East allows you to sell, at least Kidneys. Is it a good idea? In the Middle East those on the donor list get kidneys a lot sooner than in other countries where selling organs is illegal. But will more of us end up on ice in our bathtubs if selling is legal?

The best correlation the episode makes is between the idea that we can buy a womb to carry a baby, we can buy the egg, the sperm, and the womb. Why is buying an organ any different?

VEDANTAM: So all this raises a really interesting question. You know, we spend years teaching children about how to use language correctly. As someone who works in media, I often find that people who can write well are often people who know how to think well, so I often equate clarity of writing with clarity of thought.
