Have you seen the movie A Christmas Story?  There is a famous scene in which the little boy visits Santa at Higbee’s Santaland.  Here I am with Santa at Higbee’s in 1950 or 1951.

The truly unusual thing about this picture is that I am by myself.  Mother usually took us children together, and we were photographed as such.  For some reason I was there that year as the representative for the whole family.  Mother retold the story of this visit often:

She said I started out by saying, "Billy asked me to tell you what he would like."  I then listed 3 items that my older brother had mentioned to me.  Then I said, "And my little brother asked me to ask you for these things."  And I told him the 3 things my younger brother was hoping for.  At this point, Mother said, Santa leaned back and turned me a little so that he could make eye contact. 

"Honey," he said, "don't you want anything for yourself?" 

Life was good, and I couldn’t think of a thing.

Since neither of my brothers had asked for a bb gun, Santa apparently didn't feel the need to give me the safety advice he gave to the boy in the film, and I was sent on my way.

Higbee’s Muffins

Higbee Muffins Located on the 10th floor of Higbee’s department store in Cleveland, the Silver Grille hosted daily fashion shows and won accolades from Clevelanders and guidebook writer Duncan Hines. This recipe comes from The Higbee Company and the Silver Grille (Cleveland Landmark Press, 2001), which is out of print. However, Clevelanders may also be interested in another book published by the Landmark Press, Euclid Avenue: Cleveland’s Sophisticated Lady, 1920-1970, which contains 22 recipes from Halle’s and Stouffer’s. 3/4 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 3 egg yolks 1 tsp salt 4 cups flour 2 tbsp baking powder 2 cups milk 3 egg whites, beaten Cream shortening; add sugar and egg yolks, and cream well. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder, and add to mixture, alternating mixture with milk, only to moisten the batter. Gently fold in beaten eggs whites. Divide the batter into well-greased muffin tins and bake in 400° oven for 20 minutes. Makes 24 muffins. https://restaurant-ingthroughhistory.com/recipes/
