Australian gothic is the moderately terrifying liminal space that is the corridor of an Australian High School of an evening.
high school gothic
class will end in 10 minutes. 10 minutes pass, and class will end in 10 minutes. you arrive home and do your assignments, and suddenly, you're back in class. it ends in 10 minutes
the writing on the chalkboard is always different whenever you look up. no one seems to notice. you just keep copying it into your notebook
one of your classmates asks for a pen. you gave them a pen yesterday. it's back in your pencil case. you don't see them again, but the pen is back in your pencil case
it's tuesday. you have 3 days left. 3 days pass, and it's tuesday again. you have 3 days left
class just started. there are students in the halls for break time. you can hear them screaming. where are they going?
you take a test based on a book you never read. you pass the test. you don't remember answering those questions. the book never existed
you run in PE. the bell rings, and you are still running. what do you need to run from?
you open your pencil case in search of a pen. you dont have any pens. they were borrowed. you borrow a pen, you swear it used to be yours
ok these are really fun i’ll stop soon.

Our school is the best. you cannot question this.
random doors stay closed. you may not enter. and the teachers refuse to elaborate why.
you are permitted no outside communication. hide your phones. or else.
any day may be your last. you keep a taser in your back pocket. it does nothing against a gun. but it helps with the walk home.
a child dies in a car crash. you move on. the school sets up posters, students dress up as reapers and to take you to detention… why?
you sit at your desk the boys walk up and slap eachother’s hands multiple times not a highfive. its like a handshake. your not allowed to ask.
You dissect a heart… suddenly you are hungry… so hungry.. and no one else is.
someone makes you put on furry ears in the locker room. you are naked. just go along with it and they will leave you be.
you do your work. you begin work for a new class. you are punished.
wait at the meeting spot for your cousin to walk home with you. he never shows. he calls you. he walked past. you saw threw eachother.
there is a disgusting smell form the floor boards. it smells like a corpse. you do your homework extra good just in case.
you CANNOT SLEEP. you must work.
a teacher is new. he is barely a year or two older than yourself.

I will probably make a part 2 because I'm not overly fond of this one. Still.
High School Gothic
~ The student in front of you has the same backpack as you. So does the one to your left. And the one to your right. And the one behind you. And the one above you.
~ Every janitor turns their head to stare at you as you make your way down the hall. Their eyes are black, their faces expressionless, their mops moving autonomously. You walk faster.
~The entire faculty has been staring at you all day, a look of tension and hunger in their eyes. It dawns on you: your shorts are a centimeter too high.
~ The milk is expired. The meat is expired. The buns are expired. You are expired.
~ The chanting echoes through the hall, reverberating off of the lockers and creating a distant, metallic hum. “If the teacher doesn’t show up in 15 minutes...we’re legally allowed to leave.”
~ You’re not sure why we all hate the freshman. Those awful, awful freshman. Those di sguSting fR e sh man

you zone out walking to and from the bathroom. you realize you knocked on your classroom door and are briefly afraid it is the wrong door. it never is.
you are afraid to walk in the cafeteria. everyone is staring at you as you walk. any second you could fall and drop your tray. you leave the cafeteria. no one knew you were there.
you leave your house early to get coffee. you sit in the drive through for at least 20 minutes waiting. you leave the drive through. it is still not 8 a.m. when you pull into the school.
you share all of your classes with the same group of kids. you have known them since kindergarten. you never walk to class together, but sit down at the same time anyway.
administration releases a new dress code policy. you do not remember the old dress code policies. you do not remember being in dress code.
the school calls your parents and tells them you were marked absent in class. you tell them you had a sub that did not take. attendance. you do not know how teachers take attendance.
the school emails a new bell schedule out. it is the same as the old bell schedule. the bells do not ring on time.
class is quieter than usual. only one person is missing. no one mentions their absence, but the next day it is loud again.
you see kids you used to be friends with on the sidewalk. you do not look at them. you do not speak to them. you are quiet until they pass.
you see someone you vaguely recognize. your friends asks if you dated them. you can not remember. you cannot remember talking to anyone before this year.
there is a new student in class. you ask where they moved from. their friends ask where you've been. they have always been here.
your teachers keep asking where you want to go to college. you list the top three state universities. you have never visited the top three state universities.
the ag students are late to class because they were in the ag fields. where are the ag fields?
everyone is sad their favorite teacher retired. you have never met the teacher they miss.
you wrote "hello :)" on the desk in math. the next day you come back and someone responded. you do not know who responded. you will never know.
you go to the bathroom in the back of campus. the lights flicker. there are stains on the mirror and the soap dispenser is empty. another person walks in behind you. you stare at each other and nod in agreement. it smells like cigarettes. you leave the bathroom.
you wash your hands. there are no paper towels. someone is at the air dryer. they have always been at the air dryer. you turn the sink back on.
the math classrooms have windows to the teacher lounge. the lights are always off. the blinds are cracked like someone was looking into the room. you watch as teachers send students to the lounge to make up tests. they never come out before the bell rings.
the science building is the oldest on campus. you get volunteer hours for helping clean over the summer. the teacher leaves you in the supply hall and doesn't come back for hours. everytime you clean a cabinet it is dirty again when you turn around.
someone carved their name onto the lab bench. you tell a friend, but it is not there when they have lab.
there is a broken desk in the back of the room waiting to be picked up by custodians. it has always been there.
you check the clock at the same time everyday. you have memorized the schedule, but the bells never ring at the same minute. you learn the clock is broken. is it always 1:44 p.m.
the trash cans are always empty, but there is never enough room for trash during a class party.
should I do a part 2?
