one thing that strikes me as being different between the two legs of the tour is the depersonalization of the first v. second one. Like the first one had the actual Dictator there at every show, personally watching the band by himself. It also had the Clerk personally slap Gerard and give him notes and stab him at the end. It was pain and surveillance coming from flesh and blood- the dictator was right there. You knew your enemy. When Gerard lifted the dagger you know who you wanted to get stabbed by it.

Whereas in this leg- the prequel- it's metal. Cold. Impersonal. The notes from above come from a machine. Gerard gets his doll from a metal pocket in it. The dictator isn't actually there, it's just his eye watching them. The torture is, presumably, on a wider scale- they're called prisoners in the dispatches at the beginning, not performers. There's an emphasis on a system in place here, not just a group of people. The set reflects it too, with the metal bars suggesting a colder, larger-scale type of pain. I wouldn't be surprised if those eyes in the middle were like, mass produced.

Which leads me to believe that, if this really is a prequel, the slaps, the notes, and the presence of the dictator in leg 1 take on a whole new mean. In a way, I think it's almost a reward for the band. To actually have personal attention placed on them, even if it's negative. To be able to actually see who's torturing them. The proximity is, in a weird way, more reassuring than the coldness of leg 2- it's a human torturing them and not a machine. At least, in leg 1, the humans can feel and know what they're doing to the band. In leg 2, there's no one to hear them scream. It just echoes.

I looked through this photographer’s other work, at first to reassure myself that these photos were taken in a sincere and respectful spirit (they were).

The author, Chris Arnade, has spent time chronicling the lives of unhoused people battling with addiction, and wrote a stark and heart-wrenching article about it some years ago. It really highlights how much the American right wing has a long legacy of trying to hurt and deprive underprivileged people.
