Norae Bangin' the Night Away
Talking about karaoke here, folks.
You know that scene in Lost in Translation, where Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson sing karaoke in that little room and Bill busts out "What's So Funny 'bout Peace Love and Understanding"? In Korea, this type of venue is called a "norae bang" (nor-eh-bong). On Saturday at about 2AM, the bar was shutting down and my fellow teacher friends were ready to go home. Another group of foreigners walked by and asked if any of us wanted to head to the norae bang. I was the only taker, but I'm glad I went. The lobby of the place looked like this:
You rent rooms by the hour (like the Highball in Austin, only much cheaper) and then belt Soju-inspired anthems. I looked for "What's So Funny" so I could have a Bill Murray moment, but it wasn't on the song menu. Before I caught a cab around 5AM, I did get to bust this out:
If you're gonna embarrass yourself at norae bang in front of a group of strangers, might as well do it right and sing in a ridiculous falsetto voice. Amirite?!
