Temple of Isis ~ Built circa 280 BCE and completed by Ptolemy III Euergetes 246–221 BCE Before its gradual submergence in the reservoir created by the old Aswan Dam in 1902, the granite rock island of Philae, had been above the highest flood mark of the Nile. It was the perfect site to build a beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Isis, wife of Osiris and mother of Horus. However, sitting just above the high water line meant it was in deep danger later in time. Foreseeing the consequence , the temple was thoroughly explored and reinforced (1895–96) before being partially flooded behind the old Aswan Dam. In 1907 a careful inspection revealed that salts in the water were harming paints on the sacred walls. When the temple reemerged after 1970 with the completion of the High Dam upstream, it was found that considerable damage had been done to the shrines. A decision was therefore made to remove it to higher ground on the nearby island of Agilkia. The new location was leveled to resemble the original Philae and the major work of relocation began. 37.363 blocks, weighing about 20,000 tons were dismantled, moved and reassembled. Restoring this magnificent temple to its glory was an epic accomplishment. The formal celebration and reopening took place in 1980. Temple of Isis was designated an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. #iregipto #egyptpassion #egypt #Aswan #highdam (at Templo De Isis Egipto) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7G6p3QHp7D/?igshid=b860gkxnksa1
