i still feel like Lucas should brought Spielberg in to direct the prequels. They’re both friends and Spielberg’s probably the only guy who can rein in Lucas’ ideas that don’t work.
Lucas asked several directors, including Spielberg, to direct the prequels but they all refused and said he should do it (link). Oops.
Kershner did a great job with Empire and has said he would have been on board if production had started in the late 80s as originally planned. It’s a shame that he was retired by the time the prequels actually got going.
