Since I have kind of an obsession with mixing random bits of alcohol that I find in my kitchen to see what kind of delicious concoction I can come up with.  I introduce to you my new favorite weirdo cocktail: Blue Moon and Dutch’s Spirits Prohi-bitters.  

Not just any bitters, but these specifically.  Ok I don’t know that regular bitters won’t work, I just haven’t tried it.  I grabbed this bottle because it says it has hints of citrus, ginger root, hibiscus, licorice, and coriander, and fuck yeah put that all up in my beer please thanks!  And it’s kind of amazing?  Blue Moon is my beer of choice, pale, not quite as heavy with a slightly higher alcohol content.  And these bitters actually give it a crazy weird good kick.

(Honestly, I like these Dutch’s Spirits bitters because they come in these little Alice in Wonderland bottles with old-timey labeling, and that’s the kind of marketing I can get behind.)

Make-up secrets from a make-up minimalist:

All you need is BB Cream, mascara, blush, and chapstick.  That’s it.  

If you’re like me, and like the put-together feeling that make-up gives you, but don’t like the fuss.  You really just need those 4 basic items.  Trust me.  I’ve tried multiple primers, foundations, highlighters, eyeshadows, powders, blah blah blah, and they’re great, if you need them.  They’re great if you’re into all that.  But honestly.  I ain’t got time for that shit.

BB Cream (I’m kind of in love with Tarte’s Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer).  Mascara (I’ve tried expensive brands and drug store brands and I always go back to Cover Girl’s Lashblast Volume Mascara--I just know to grab for the one in the orange tube).  Blush (I don’t know that I’ll ever use anything besides Josie Maran’s Coconut Water Cheek Gelee tbh).  Chapstick (I’ve probably singlehandedly kept Burt’s Bees in business for the last 15 years just by buying their chapstick alone.  That’s all I can wear.  But if I want something with color, I really like Maybelline’s Baby Lips Lip Balm--I usually get the one in the purple tube called Peach Kiss).

This is what I’ve been drinking today.  Corn whiskey and bitters.  I’m fairly new to bitters, so I don’t know the tricks, and proper mixing methods, but I’ve been playing around.  Which, let’s be honest, is basically the the fun of owning my own (sometimes) well-stocked liquor cabinet.

I stumbled across these particular bitters last time I was at the Brown Derby.  There are 3 different flavors, styled after different eras: colonial, boomtown/goldrush, and prohibition.  So, of course I had to buy them.  I’ve been using the Colonial bitters today, which I believe are more of a classic bitter flavor (these have a very strong hit of lavender over all the other goodness in them).  The Boomtown one, is kind of wintergreen-y and sarsaparilla, and it’s weird and amazing and I’m definitely going to play around with it more.  The Prohibition one is supposedly meant to mix in your gin martini, which I haven’t really had the chance to play around with, but am definitely going to at some point.

I’ve been told that the very first mixed cocktail on record was gin and bitters?  A splash (or 3 or 4) of bitters, a shot or two of gin, over ice.  So that’s your history lesson for today, and I will go on record saying I approve this historical cocktail, as well as always keeping your liquor cabinet stocked with bitters.

The best self-help advice I can give you right now is buy new shampoo (and conditioner if you use it).  A kind you’ve used and liked in the past but have moved on from, a brand new kind you’ve never tried, it doesn’t matter.  As long as it’s different from what you’ve been using for the past weeks, months, however long.

Now, this may only be beneficial to people with long hair, I don’t know, so I may only be targeting a specific group of people.  But even more than a new body wash or lotion, there’s something much more intense and present about a new scent to your hair that, for me, is just enough of a shock to the system to bump me out of whatever funk I’d been in.

On my last trip to Sephora I picked up a sample set of Bumble and Bumble Surf shampoo, conditioner, and surf spray.  I’ve never used their products, hadn’t heard anything about this particular product, but it intrigued me so I bought it.  (You don’t need to shell out $30 though if you don’t want to.  Drug store shampoo is perfect and cheap and works just as well for this as any other.)  

I just.  I love washing my hair and letting it air dry (sit in the sun, by an open window if the breeze is nice, make a drink, take a picture, put on some music or turn the music off, just take a minute to breathe).  I love having a sort of halo of new scent hovering around me all day long.  It’s amazing, and it helps.  It helps me, anyway, and it helps enough that I’m suggesting others try it as well.

After sifting through the literal crap-ton of torture porn and b-grade horror films on Netflix, I finally settled on a little gem called Dread.  Either I have some blind luck, or someone out there is really looking out for me, but this movie was a goddamned treasure.  It wasn't "scary," per se, but it was a well-written, strongly acted, gorgeous horror film, and I highly fucking recommend it.  Jackson Rathbone is a delight, and Shaun Evans is...well he's fucking sexy, mostly, and actually terrifying, but by the end I sort of just wanted to scream YES at the tv and high five him because goddamn.  Just...watch it.

Pace is the Trick -- Hoosier/Leckie

I've read this too many times to count. (Literally. I've lost track.) And every time it's just as excruciatingly hot as that very first time I read it.  It's slow and steady and burns hot all the way through to the end when the tension breaks and you can't catch your breath.  And Hoosier is filthy and perfect and Leckie is delightfully debauched and it's porn but god it's just damn good writing too it hurts so good just read it.
