PREVIEW: Black Clouds

On July 27, we're serving a smorgasbord of local music on the 9:30 stage. Headlining this mini-fest, featuring seven artists, will be metal band Black Clouds. They released their first effort, Everything Is Not Going To Be Okay, in 2012. The album is jam packed with complex instrumental pieces, culminating with the powerful "Santorum Sunday School," which inspired the name of the album. With them comes thrash metal band Warchild, with whom they have played numerous shows.

However, like we said, this is a smorgasbord, and as such, we're not only serving metal. Shark Week will join us with their unique brand of surf rock, playing in preparation for the release of a new album on July 30. In fact, if you come to the show, they'll sell it to you three days early! Local indie band Typefighter is also preparing to release a new album, so they'll bring with them more reasons to celebrate.

In true DC style, we've added a few punk bands to the bill as well. True Head, a new project coming from Ahron Reinhard (Lion of Judah) and Israel Soriano (The First Step) has a sound reminiscent of Dischord Records hardcore. Highway Cross of Arlington shares these influences. On the track "Suspicion Police" off their 7'' Locked In, they make me think of DC hardcore band Police & Thieves on their 2008 record Amor Y Guerra. Both Police & Thieves and True Head release on Youngblood Records--maybe Highway Cross is headed that way as well.

Anyway, I could preach for days about how everyone should support local music. But don't support these bands JUST because they're local--support them because they're incredibly talented and worthy of your support.
