edit: since al-hazred is a last name, and in my head he and junia are close, i chose idris (enoch) as a first name. some scholars believe the prophet idris is representative of hermes trismegistus, the legendary father of hermetic philosophy which in turn greatly influenced occultism.

one thing i like about the dd series is that it rarely seems to give a fuck about ‘face reveals’ or like. mystery with their masked cast. like yea tardif has never been shown but hes more of an outlier that proves the rule, rather than the rule; its the same with damian, too

reynauld, baldwin, amani, paracelsus, josephine, hell, even dismas - it’s all incredibly casual, you can see them unmasked in game, or in official art, not even artistically obscured or anything. makes it feel less like a ‘masked character’ and more like a ‘character who is masked’ thing. makes em feel more real, and makes our outliers (tardif, damian) stand out even more in comparison. some good characterization and character design for all!

reynauld is so character to me. he strives for the ultimate goal of redemption but refuses to admit guilt or even consider what he did as wrong. he looks down on ‘blackguards’ and ‘rogues’ while he himself is an unrepenting thief. hes a stalwart zealot, who has comitted atrocities in the name of his religion.

ESPECIALLY when contrasted against dismas... dismas, the common criminal, reynauld’s partner in their shared goal for redemption. he drinks, he swears, hes kind of an ass, hes a blasphemous heathen and a lowlife. his crime, though great, is practically nothing compared to what reynauld has likely done as a crusader. and it is his biggest guilt, his biggest regret. it haunts him. and hes reynauld’s friend, maybe even his best friend. despite their outward appearances dismas is, arguably, a better man than he is - not that reynauld really is self-aware enough to recognize that

personally, im not sure reynauld’s strongest trait is that he’s religious. its a big one, yes, but i think theres one dwarfs it entirely-

reynauld, to his core, is a hypocrite.

learning about the middle ages in school rn giving me all sorts of ideas. imagine if in dd x dst dismas is scratching his head and black flecks are flying everywhere and wilson is like ‘you have FLEAS?!’ and dismas, equally surprised, exclaims ‘you DON’T?!?’

a bit of scientific research latter and wilson has to come the horrible realization that yes, everyone in this hamlet has fleas, the only people here who don’t have fleas are paracelsus (doctor) and damian (bald)

welcome to the ambigiously middle ages time period of darkest dungeon, wilson. at least these people actually bathe more than once a year, thanks to the bathhouse installed in the sanitarium
