xingqiu’s interest in the pursuit of justice had always been,  if not superseded by,  then at the very least on par with his thirst for knowledge.   it was only natural,  then,  that where the two intersected,  his curiosity would not be so easily doused.   the topic of liyue’s renowned adepti was very much a case in point.

when the subject is broached,  the first thing he feels is chastised.   maybe he shouldn’t have approached it with such obvious excitement,  but how was he to help it?   even now,  after xiao’s reproach,  xingqiu can’t quite shove his interest down.

“   it is you,  then,   ”   xingqiu says with a note of awe.   he hadn’t been sure   —   it’d been a theory,  pieced together from bits and scraps of the collection of various ancient books he’d managed to examine,  a theory yet to be tested   —   and so he’d tested it.   and he’d been right.

he smiles,  and it holds none of his usual childish mischief,  only an understanding reassurance.   “   don’t worry,  xiao-gē.   er…   we don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to?   ”   he offers hesitantly,  watching them out of the corner of his eye,  and pauses.   he’s very obviously hopeful about it,  however diminished the hope has been in the past minutes.   “   unless,  that is…   do you want to?   it doesn’t have to be about your past,  specifically!   i’d love to hear about the others,  too!   ah,  but only if it won’t pain you to tell their stories.   of course.   i don’t…   ”   he trails off,  voice small,   “   i didn’t mean to push.   ”
