Zac and I made a trip to the Grand Canyon. It was my first and Zac's 4th. He's an old pro and I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to all things canyon. It is still winter so the weather was a bit chilly when we arrived mid afternoon. We got a bite to eat and decided to go on a hike. After a major fail on the Bright Angel Trail, which we could only venture down about 10 minutes, we drove to the Hermits Trail. The Bright Angel Trail, although an easy and accesible hike, was frozen solid for a good portion of the trail. We tried to hake it, but our tennis shoes and boots couldn't stand up to the sheer ice. We basically ice-skated down and back up, while holding on to the canyon walls. I screamed the whole time of course. After the hike we had a great dinner at the El Tovar Lodge Restaurant. I highly suggest the steak. After a bottle of wine and hitting the sack we awoke to the canyon covered in snow. It was my first snow of the winter season. Being on the west coast in the warm weather climates made me forget that winter exists. I feel as if seeing the grand canyon in the off season in both sunny and snowy conditions was so unique, especially for my first time. I highly recommend the trip, but remember to bundle up and take layers. I'll be posting pictures from the trip over the next few days.
