If Okita Souji is the wind helping Kondo Isami the kite fly, Hijikata Toshizo is the crow that chased after the kite, while Tominaga Sei is the grass unable to follow, forever stuck feeling the slightest of breezes.

Hijikata “I got better from Tuberculosis because my best friend came to see me and told me to promise him I’d share my life with him” Toshizo. Kondo “shoujo bubbles show up in the background when my best friend says he will make me a lord” Isami.

A present from Hijikata, on a very special day.

Drabble written for Takano Akira's birthday (22th July) about his role as Kondo Isami in the 2024 drama series Shinsengumi ~ Kimi to yukite.

It wasn't until Hijikata silently lied down beside Kondo's futon, in the latter's bedroom, that the Shinsengumi leader opened his eyes; the full moon shone outside the paper walls, casting pale flecks of light on both of them.

"Hey..."

"You shouldn't let your guard -this- down," Hijikata frowned, "should it have been a Choshu clan rebel, instead of me, you'd be more than dead by now."

"True," Kondo replied, "but I am a human being myself, and this means I have my weaknesses as well."

Hijikata frowned even more.

"Do you mean I am one, to you?"

"Not at all..." Kondo replied, hand reaching out to touch Hijikata's sleeve, "It's just that you're the only one my senses do not get an alert about, even whenever I'm at my weakest."

"Should I get offended?"

"An alert about danger, I mean."

"Maybe I could get offended even more, you know?"

Kondo chuckled and gently seized Hijikata by his waist, pulling him onto his own futon, above him.
