what are your thoughts about this dean(na) winchester and raylan givens being ' white knights ' business - ? ( |: TAKE THE FLOOR, BRO. )
i really, really don’t like it. i have no idea where it’s been coming from either.
white knight characters are fine and dandy. they make for good characters, etc, don’t get me wrong. but to say that either raylan or dean(na) are white knights goes against the grit of who they are, respectively. yes — both will go to terrifying ends to protect those few — keyword; few — they care about / love. they’ll bend morals to do so if needed. and yeh, they try to keep members of the general population safe but when push comes to shove, outside of a small circle of people — both of them couldn’t care less about the ’ general population. ‘
they’re good people with good hearts. but, they’re also really, really big assholes. the thing is, they don’t jump up to go rush and do ’ good ’ things or be ’ big heroes ’ because they feel this burning need to save the masses from this awful world.
i know a lot of people haven’t seen justified, but raylan is [ far ] from the white knight. being a marshal / lawman means shit as far as that’s concerned. he didn’t become a marshal to save the world — it had to do with his father. hell, he set up a kid for life in prison as means of pressing the real culprit without having guarantee beyond his own instincts / abilities that it was even going to work at all. white knights don’t take risks like that; they don’t lay innocents out for potential slaughter in hopes of catching bigger fish. he’s morally questionable and arguably unhinged — especially in latter seasons. he’s in a dark place. yeh, he’ll go out for justice/what’s ’ right ’ but it’s on his terms and based upon his definitions. the badge just makes shit he pulls legal. which is really scary, tbqh. he bends the law to his whim and finds ways to manipulate situations [ ie ; the crowes in s5 ] into his favor seamlessly. again; he is a good man. he is not a white knight on a steed set out to — for example — comfort ava crowder because she fucked herself over [ like he warned her she would ]. he’s saved a shitload of people he didn’t have to and goes out of his way for those he gives a shit about — that arguably don’t deserve it but that’s another rant — that’s raylan, not some tragic do-gooder caught in this cruel world and only trying to do right by everyone ever.
and deanna — there’s a reason it’s been pointed out canonically, by multiple characters, that the people deanna doesn’t see as useful / care about end up dead. that once she’s finished with them, she leaves them to whatever fate they have. it’s not as black and white as that, obviously, but there is truth to that. if you aren’t sam [ or raylan, if we go by current things and not just canon ] the likelihood she’d throw you to the dogs if she needed to is higher than people assume. don’t narrow her down to someone that’s sole focus is ’ hunting things, saving people, the family business. ’ it hasn’t been that for quite some time. much like raylan, she’ll do what’s right / good intentioned in her eyes and on her terms. if she were all about white knighting it up and saving people, she wouldn’t have broke in hell and jumpstarted the apocalypse that killed so many people. or, y’know, she would have killed sam when her father told her she might need to because then there would be no risk at all of lucifer getting to sam to use him as a vessel and the world would be saved / the great good of humanity would survive. she said fuck that and chose sam over the world. dean(na) winchester is capable of being an incredibly selfish person. selfishly selfless / selflessly selfish ; it’s a huge toss up which side of the coin her motives fall on. deanna wouldn’t turn her nose up at someone that genuinely needs her help, no. if they’re in the area. but if someone is expecting her to head across country to help out with a nasty demonic situation in their town, the answer is no. why would she give a shit about some town across the country — ?
TL;DR — STOP GLAMORIZING THESE TWO.
