thoughts on most iconic Buster Keaton role/film?
oh boy. film nerds generally agree that The General is his masterpiece, but i've got mixed feelings because it portrays the confederacy in a sympathetic light. buster, with the blind privilege of a white man in the 1920s, bought into the lost cause myth hook, line and sinker. on the upside, he doesn't show the vitriolic hate of d.w. griffith, and even in the rest of his films he doesn't lean on racist stereotypes as hard as other comedians of the era (lookin' at you, harold lloyd). on the downside… he's tacitly supporting white supremacy. that's a complicated legacy for a film to have. i'm saving it along with the rest of his best movies, but I don't think i'll be able to love it wholeheartedly the way i do The Cameraman or Steamboat Bill, Jr. masterpiece or no, it's aged like milk.
on a lighter note, arguably one of his most famous short films is Cops, which i've talked about a little here. among other reasons, i love it for the simple fact that it opens the door for grotty prisonfic >:)
(for the askmeme prompt: can y'all send some asks that are like “thoughts on __”)
Hey Mama Bree- I’ve been in a major depressive episode for quite a few months and have fallen out of touch with my craft. I was wondering if you had any advice for dipping my toes back into my craft without overwhelming myself? (I.e. setting up my alter seems too exhausting right now)
First, let me just assure you - you are not alone in this. I’ve been there, and I know it’s a hard slog. BIG big ups to you for every single bit of forward momentum you’re managing each day, even when it’s only a tiny bit. You’re doing AMAZING, pumpkin, and I’m proud of you.
It’s important to start small and start easy. If setting up an altar is too much effort, maybe just light a candle. No big ritual, no chanting or complicated spellwork. Just light a candle, and let that little flame remind you that you’ve still got that spark.
If you need some downtime, why not watch a movie or read a book? Or maybe just kick back and relax with some music? Pick something that holds some nostalgic value to you as a witch, something that spoke to you or made you feel magical. It’s a good way of getting back in touch with that sense of inspiration and motivation that often feels out of reach during depressive episodes.
If you’re in a writing mood, journal any stray bits of witchy thought you might have, or fun little musings that strike you. It doesn’t have to be anything complex or dedicated. This is another small motivational exercise to help you organize your thoughts and retain the little ideas you have throughout the day.
If you make yourself a cup of tea or a meal, stir a little get-well spell into it. Stir clockwise and visualize positivity and healing and strength infusing into your drink or your food. Alternatively, this can be done while sprinkling in seasonings. It can be something as simple as, “May this cup of tea help me make it through the day.” Sometimes, that’s all you need.
And remember, if you need help, please reach out to someone and take good care of yourself! I wish you a nice easy weekend with good food, good sleep, and something to give you a smile. 😉❤️️
Yes! I am here for this. I feel like they’d be the types to adopt strays and nurse them back to health
I actually wrote something like this a few years back but I never posted it, so I guess this is the perfect moment to do that, haha. This is entirely unedited, and I haven’t touched the text since… 2016? Idk, but I hope it doesn’t suck 😂
"May I have this dance?" Bucky asked, surprising Steve whose face was turning a light shade of pink. Steve nodded hesitantly but then looked down.
"I don't know how to dance, though," he mumbled but Bucky obviously didn't care as he carefully placed the sketchbook on the table, then pulled Steve up and out on the floor.
"I'll teach you."
Steve looked at Bucky's hand as he carefully placed it on Steve's waist, pulling him closer. Bucky then took Steve's other hand in his and grinned at him. "You're supposed to place your hand on my shoulder y'know."
Steve did as Bucky instructed and placed a hand on his shoulder. He could feel a small hint of nervousness as he was suddenly this close with his best friend, the guy he admired so much and, well, the guy he was so in love with. Bucky's confidence had always impressed Steve and he wished that he could be confident too someday, but he also doubted that it would ever happen.
"Look down at my feet. You basically just mirror my movements," Bucky said with that attractive smile of his, the smile that drove Steve crazy because it looked so good on his lips.
Bucky slowly started moving to the music. At first it was difficult for Steve to keep up with him but eventually he got the hang of it, and his movements started to look more like dancing rather than stumbling around. The song on the radio switched after a while to something a little slower than before, and Steve honestly thought his heart was going to stop beating when he felt Bucky move even closer to him.
They danced around like this through multiple songs, and it was quite obvious that they both were having fun. Bucky had a huge smile on his face and even Steve was smiling, sometimes laughing whenever one of them messed up. Of course it was inevitable that Steve would sometimes step on Bucky's foot or almost stumble over his own feet as he didn't have any experience, but regardless of that, the moment wasn’t ruined.
i just got this! i AM a goncharov enthusiast, thank you for Understanding me! (and for the help in writing my gonch fic, i couldn't have done it without you)
