I'm really interested in religion. I'm a vaishnaivite Hindu, and I live in America. I'd like to go to school for something religion related, but I have heard that religious studies is mainly geared toward Christian theology?
Oh, good gracious no! It does vary from school to school, and Christianity is definitely overrepresented in the literature, but there’s lots of programs that delve into other religions. I don’t know off the top of my head what schools have especially good options for Hindu Studies, but I do know that they exist. Buddhism is probably a bit more popular in American academia these days (I could name schools with specific Buddhist Studies programs off the top of my head), but most schools offer religious studies programs with an emphasis on (or even exclusively on) Asian religions and you could focus on Hinduism from there.
