Rakshasas / Ravana

Ravana is the king of Lanka and the chief antagonist in the Hindu epic Ramayana and its adaptations.

Ravana is one of the demon kings in India. A king of the rakshasas who ruled over the rakshasa tribe from his home on the island of Lanka (Ceylon), with ten heads, twenty arms and copper-coloured eyes, moon-shining teeth and a huge mountain-like body.

Ravana was born to great sage Vishrava (or Vesamuni), and his wife, the Rakshasa princess Kaikesi in the Treta Yuga. He is a half-brother to Kubera, the god of wealth and treasure.

Ravana had to work hard for a thousand years to re-establish the Rakshasa tribe, who had once been driven from Lanker Island because of their arrogance.

It was a severe asceticism of chopping off his ten heads one by one and throwing them in the fire. When he was about to cut off the last one, he was recognised by Lord Brahma, who gave him the immense privilege of being "as good as God and Buddha".

Also, after being punished for shaking Mount Kailas, where Shiva lived, Ravana was given the sword Chandrakhaas (moon blade) when Shiva forgave him.

ラークシャサ / ラヴァーナ

ラヴァーナはランカの王であり、ヒンドゥー教の叙事詩「ラーマーヤナ」とその翻案版の中では主敵である。

ラーヴァナは、インドにおける魔王の1人。叙事詩・ラーマーヤナに登場するラークシャサ（羅刹）の王で、ランカー島（セイロン島）を本拠地としてラークシャサ族を治める。10の頭、20の腕と銅色の目、月のように輝く歯と山のような巨体を持つ。

ラヴァーナは大賢者ヴィシュラヴァ（またはヴェッサムニ）とその妻であるラークシャサの王女カイケシの間に生まれ、トレタ・ユガの時代に生まれた。富と財宝の神クベーラ神とは異母兄弟にあたる。

ラーヴァナはかつて傲慢さゆえにランカー島を追われたラークシャサ族の再興を期して、千年のあいだ苦行に励んだ。それは10ある頭を1つずつ切り落として火にくべるという荒行で、最後の1つを切ろうとしたとき、ブラフマー神に認められ、「神仏に負けない」という絶大な特権を得た。

またシヴァの住むカイラス山を揺らして罰せられたラーヴァナは、シヴァに許された際チャンドラハース（月の刃）という剣を貰う。
