As part of the book fair I was asked to provide a sample from my book to hook the readers. This is what I provided.

Title: Hippie Logic

Author: Gina Marie

Sample: In the midst of his returned boredom, Danny pulled a nail file out from inside his shirtsleeve and began grooming his nails while staring out the window. At first, he thought that the unchanging scenery was going to make things easier for him to drift away to his own thoughts. Then, his attention was turned to the other side of the road, turning him away from both his thoughts and nail grooming. He blinked when he saw it, thinking that the sight could not possibly have been real. Rubbing his eyes, he looked out the window again, to be absolutely sure that his mind was not playing tricks on him. Going along the side of the road was a beautiful girl, smoothly doing cartwheels in the grass. Her sun-bleached hair blew about in the breeze, and her perfectly tanned skin captured the setting sun peeking through nearby trees.  She moved gracefully within her cartwheels, causing her ample bare breasts to bounce freely. As Danny watched her, a broad smile came to his lips. It was then that Sebastian looked over at him to spy the growing smile plastered on Danny’s face. Curious, he scooted over to Danny and peeked over his shoulders, out the window.

       “Hey what’re you looking at?”

       Danny pointed out the window and laughed. “Check ‘er out!”

       “Who?” Sebastian looked closer at the scenery outside the window. When he saw the topless cartwheel girl, he too smiled just as broadly before letting out a whistle. “Well would you look at those!”

       Curiously, Brownie leaned over in his seat, craning his neck toward the window the other two guys peered out of. “What are you guys lookin’ at?”

       “Naked titties!”

       “And the chick that goes with them!”

       “What? Where?” Tulip sat up fast and franticly searched out his window.

       Brownie and Tulip scrambled to the back of the van and squeezed their way in between the other two at the window. As they all started watching the cartwheel girl, it was very clear that they were not the only ones who took notice to her. Car horns honked, and people shouted, cheering on her topless cartwheels.

       “Well, hot damn!” Exclaimed Tulip

       “Look at her go!” Brownie added

       “Please God don’t let her stop doing those beautiful cartwheels!” Danny beamed

       “Or find a shirt!” Laughed Sebastian

       The barely moving cars at this point had come to a complete stop. Everyone that had her in their view watched the girl as she continued her cartwheels. For a moment, she nearly disappointed everybody when she came to a dead stop. However, she then looked directly at the vehicles and began bouncing up and down in her place. The shouts, whistles and horn honks became even louder, as everybody watched her bounce. As she did so, she coaxed everyone to cheer louder, which was exactly what happened. Suddenly, turning with a hop, the girl skipped away, disappearing into the nearby trees.

Bus station music

Nearby, on another side of the bus station, Danny had just bought a bus pass. The sound of the banjo music hit his ears and caught his fascination. Following the sound, he made it over to a crowded corner of the station. Danny smiled as he listened to the music, having never heard such talent this close up before. He wanted to see who was behind the banjo, but his short stature made it difficult. Hopping in place, Danny tried to see over the people in front of him, but all he could see of the banjo player was long, dark blond hair.

        At this point, Sebastian heard the sound of someone hopping in place. He glanced up a couple times, trying to see who it could have been. All he could see was what appeared to be a little kid, with brown hair, trying to peak over the crowd of people. Sebastian continued to play his music until someone over the loudspeaker announced the arrival of the bus he was waiting for. He stopped playing his banjo, and stood up to gather his bag and the money that people had thrown at him. Then, slinging his banjo over one shoulder by the strap, he whistled as he followed the crowd to the bus.

        At the same time, Danny felt a little disappointed that he could not get the identity of the talented banjo player. While still having that in his mind, he went outside and boarded the bus. He squeezed past the other passengers and found an empty seat in the very back of the bus. Feeling lucky that he had managed to get one of the remaining empty seats, Danny sank down into it and held his bags on his lap.

         As the bus pulled away from the station, Danny looked out the window nearest to him. Keeping his gaze out the window, he watched for a few minutes as the scenery rolled by. For a moment, he looked away from the window and towards the other passengers. That was when he spied, just a few rows ahead of him, the neck of the banjo and the blond hair of the banjo player. Even though it was not something he would normally do, Danny decided that he would go over to the banjo player and tell him how talented he was. Feeling wobbly as he stood, he sat back down and decided it would be best to wait for the bus to stop. As soon as it did, Danny stood back up to go over to the banjo player. However, this task was rather difficult to do, since other people were getting off the bus. He stopped and waited for everyone clear the aisle way. Once everyone was gone, Danny saw that the banjo player was no longer there. So then, Danny sank back into his seat and decided that there was no need to worry about the random strangers he would come across on his journey.

A wake up call

October 1968

        The morning sun slowly rose in the sky, glowing a sweet tangerine and mauve reflection in the ocean overlooking Malibu beach. A few pink clouds floated across the sky, leading the sunbeams over to a grassy hill and the two-story beach house that waited at the top of it. Spanning out towards the window at the top floor, a single sunbeam peeked inside the bedroom. This sunbeam was greeted by the colorful beaded curtain hanging over the window, which created glowing orbs in an array of colors on the wall and floor. The colored light orbs seemed to almost dance as they moved about to the sound of an unevenly spinning record on the nearby record player, sitting on the floor in-between two beds.

        Soft snores mixed with a few quiet grumbles as they escaped from the inhabitant of the only occupied bed of the room. The sleeping man lay with his mass of brown curls falling partly into his face. With one hand, he reached up to brush the frizzy curls out of his eyes. As soon as his hand lazily rested by his side, the hair fell back in place over his eyes where it previously had been. The man yawned and stretched before shifting to lie on his back. As he did this, securely and deep within his state of peaceful sleep, he did not notice as someone else entered the bedroom.

        Slowly closing the door behind them, two young men walked quietly toward the two beds. The taller blond had to stifle his laughter by covering his mouth with his hand. The shorter of the two turned fast towards the blond, making a shushing motion with a finger across his lips. Once regaining his composure, the blond looked towards the sleeping man in the bed. His eyes then moved down toward the record player on the floor. Heading straight for the record player, he then looked toward the shorter man by the window. The two of them then exchanged silent motions, to indicate their silent and spontaneous plan.

        After quickly going through the small stack of records next to the player, the blond man spotted the loudest album in the collection. A mischievous smirk fell upon his face as he held the “My Generation” album by The Who. After slipping the black vinyl out of the sleeve, the man very carefully switched its place with the record on the player. Then, holding the needle, he turned the volume up as loud as it could go and looked up at the shorter man. Raising his hand in the air, he counted on his fingers. Once he reached “three”, he dropped the needle on the record and the shorter man pulled open the beaded curtain. At the same time, the two of them shouted and pounded on the bed. Even though the man in the bed had already awakened in a panic, they continued to shake him and shout at him.

        “JAAAAAAMIIEEE!!!!”

        “Getupgetupgetupgetupgetup!”

        “I’m up! I’m up! Get the hell away!” He pushed them away as he lay back down with his head covered by his pillow.

        Looking briefly at each other, the two other men reached out for the man in the bed. With a firm grip, they yanked him back up into seated position, tossing the pillow to the floor.

        “Oh no, Jamie.” The blond man said. “You’re not going back to sleep now.”

        The shorter man laughed and allowed his British accent to come out a little thick as he spoke. “You’ve go’ to get up now. Got lots of stuff t’ do today and you’ve already slept most of the morning.”

                Jamie rubbed his eyes and yawned. “Well great. Let me keep sleeping then.”  He lay back down, resting his head where the pillow once was.
