Take “The Long Way Home….”, and upon finishing his ROTC service in 1956- #MuseumofRussianIcons founder Gordon Lankton did just that. Setting out on an epic #roadtrip from Germany to Japan, Lankton mounted a 1956 NSU Supermax motorcycle and traversed Asia on a nine month journey that would be near impossible today. . Lankton, a plastics entrepreneur & perpetual collector passed away in 2021 just shy of his 90th birthday. In honor of their founder the Museum presents this collection of photographs, journals and ephemera from the journeys of the then 22 year old explorer. Beginning in Cologne, Germany his journey would cross through Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Hong Kong and Japan….all on his “long way home” from the Army back to The States. In parts the route follows roughly what would later be known as the #HippieTrail (half full of zombies) and it’s an amazing journey to behold. The photography is stunning- there’s a photo from Pakistan, and another from Japan that were my favorites. I am entertained and intrigued by the snapshot image presented in Hippie by Paulo Coelho, but an image is what the book remains. I am left wanting more of a journey and more of a story on the Hippie Trail. On the other hand, I could see it made into a movie for it paints a vivid picture. I walk away with the thought that in this case, it is the journey that matters not the destination.

Mat Hughes. Photographic Artist. One from the archives. I have no real recollection of this. I suspect this was en route to Pokhara in Nepal probably 1990. Two days later I had severe giardia from contaminated water that not even the very best Nepalese Black could cure!
