THE BEATLES ASHRAM IN RISHIKESH Re the first photo I asked those three guys for the location of the nearest cannabis source. They looked at me bewildered… I’d forgotten that I had a small GoPro attached to my head. Doh!

I visited Bangkok a number of times whilst researching for The Drug Users Bible. Then, in June 2022, this happened…
Back to Bangkok: but this time something is different. These photos [Flickr album] were taken largely between Soi Cowboy and Sukhumvit Soi 11 last week.
I’m not sure how long this free-for-all situation will last, as restrictions and regulations are already being debated in the wings.
DRUGS SAY STOP THE DRUG WAR [FRAMED VERSION] I’ve taken the liberty of updating a collage I created a couple of years ago. It comprises 36 of the 182 psychoactives I self-administered for the writing of The Drug Users Bible.
Listed row by row:
Methamphetamine, Xanax, Morning Glory Seeds, Heroin, Opium, Yopo Seeds
2C-B-Fly, 3-FPM, 1P-LSD, Hawaiian Baby Woodrose Seeds, Cannabis, Amphetamine
GHB, Diazepam, Celastrus Paniculatus Seeds, Kratom, Psilocybe Cubensis Mushrooms, 2C-I
MDMA, Pyrazolam, Noopept, Rapé, 2AI, Ubulawu
Adderall, Etizolam, Kola Nut, Valerian Root, Cocaine, DXM
Clonazolam, MXP, AL-LAD, San Pedro Cactus, Salvia Divinorum, Street Hash
The cannabis comprising the letter 'P' is gelato. The hash in the bottom right-hand corner is Moroccan.
JUST A FRIDGE... WITH 400 DOSES OF MAGIC TRUFFLES IN IT As per this excerpt from The Drug Users Bible:
“Truffles broadly comprise the underground hardening of a mushroom's mycelium, and are part of the fungus itself. Hardly surprisingly, therefore, magic truffles provide the same effects as regular magic mushrooms. When the Dutch government banned magic mushrooms in 2008, but left truffles unaffected, the latter exploded in popularity, particularly in Amsterdam.”
My first truffle trip, which I described in the book after that intro, was actually a bit of a disaster. I bought 15g in a box labelled ‘Dolphin’s Delight’, and gobbled the lot. It was way too much for the circumstances: a hot sunny day, in the middle of a crowded city centre (Amsterdam), whilst I was still slightly stoned from an earlier visit to a coffeeshop.
The set and setting were wrong and I was quickly overwhelmed. That’s the lesson right there, not only for truffles but for psychedelics generally. Common sense matters: don’t be like me. :-)
THE PROBLEM WITH YERBA MATE During lockdown I decided to experiment with a range of botanicals which were freely available and which sometimes had conflicting claims to be psychoactive. One of these was yerba mate, which is openly sold in most major supermarkets as an alternative to regular tea (and which contains theobromine and theophylline).
I also post this as a public service announcement on the basis of its link to cancer, which is not very well known (but which is widely cited on medical sites). Remember that sometimes even the weaker stuff can pose hidden dangers.
-
EXCERPT FROM THE DRUG USERS BIBLE Originally popular in central and southern regions of South America, yerba mate is now found across the world, including within a variety of energy drinks. Whilst it has been on my radar for some years I have hesitated to engage largely on the basis of the following health warning, courtesy of Mayo Clinic:
“However, some studies indicate that people who drink large amounts of yerba mate over long periods may be at increased risk of some types of cancer, such as cancer of the mouth, throat and lungs. Drinking very hot yerba mate — 149 F (65 C) or hotter — is associated with a higher risk of cancer than is drinking yerba mate at cooler temperatures.”
On the other side of the coin, it is frequently claimed to have a number of health benefits, such as reduction of cholesterol, improved immune response and the aiding of digestion.
At time of writing there is a considerable amount of hype around the Internet promoting this tea, which tends to cite a range of such health benefits, as well as comparing it positively to coffee, typically claiming that it delivers the buzz without the jitters.
I acquired my yerba mate from the local supermarket, selecting a well known brand. I subsequently brewed my tea pig in boiling water for 3 minutes and then allowed it to cool (as per the health warning above).
I began sipping the brew at 12 noon. It had a sort of tangy fresh edge to it, with a mild earthy back taste, not at all like regular tea. For context, at the start of the experiment I was a little weary, having had a short nap and a vegetarian brunch.
I did feel more of a sense of well-being after consumption, with less of a caffeine buzz than regular tea. For me, occasional claims that it is mildly psychedelic are rather strong. That well-being, however, could possibly be stretched to empathogenic, carried along with some mental clarity and the gentle stimulation. Its taste was decent, but given the citation above it's only one for occasional use.
It was quite pleasant and refreshing in the circumstances, and it was something of a surprise that it did indeed have a distinct effect. This faded gradually during the afternoon.
Overall, if expectations are not set unreasonably high, this provides a positive experience, and is one which I may repeat given the correct circumstance in the future.

MY UNEXPECTED PREGABALIN NIGHTMARE Pregabalin use seems to be increasing significantly at the moment and I am seeing far too many reckless doses being discussed. I was complacent with this and I got burned, but my tale of woe might at least serve as a heads-up for a few people.

MY BELOVED PSYCHOACTIVE PLANTS, SEEDS & ROOTS At the height of my experimentation I had 6 drawers of different psychoactive botanicals running at once, plus a case for the bulky stuff. I’m not sure which are in each drawer specifically, but overall I sampled and documented the following (taken from the book’s contents page):
PSYCHEDELICS Ayahuasca, Cebil, Chaliponga Leaves, Fly Agaric, HBWS, Iboga, Magic Mushrooms, Magic Truffles, Morning Glory Seeds, Ololiuqui, Salvia, Sananga, San Pedro Cactus, Sinicuichi, Syrian Rue, Yopo
STIMULANTS Betel Nut, Coca, Ephedra, Ginseng, Green Tea, Guarana, Guayusa, Horny Goat Weed, Khaini, Kola Nut, Wormwood, Yerba Mate, Yohimbe
SEDATIVES Blue Lotus [+Pink Lotus Flower +Red Lily], Cacao, Catnip, Chamomile, Damiana, Frankincense, Hops, Imphepho, Indian Warrior, Kanna, Lavender, Maconha Brava, Marihuanilla, Mullein, Mulungu, Passion Flower, Rhodiola, Saffron, St. John's Wort, Skullcap, Valerian Root, White Sage, Wild Dagga, Wild Lettuce
NOOTROPICS Catuaba, Celastrus Paniculatus, Ginkgo
ONEIROGENS (DREAM HERBS) Calea, Entada Rheedii, Mexican Tarragon, Mugwort, Ubulawu
DELIRIANTS Datura, Nutmeg
UNCLASSIFIED Cannabis, Kava Kava, Kratom, Mad Honey, Mapacho, Opium, Rapé, Sakae Naa, Tobacco.
As you would probably expect, many of these produced positive experiences; in fact some were astonishing in nature. Others however were relatively bland, with a few being truly horrendous, and indeed, traumatic.
Something I did learn early was that the need for a harm reduction process didn’t just apply to my chemical journey: due diligence and proper research are essential pre-requisites for all forms of psychoactive exploration. I burned myself too often. Stay Safe.

THE DRUG USERS BIBLE: THE END OF THE JOURNEY The complete version of The Drug Users Bible has now been published: and this definitely is the final cut. I’m getting too old for the constant drug touring, and the ride cannot go on for ever.
For this edition I added an extra 25 psychoactives, bringing the total to 182. These were:
3-MMC a-PHP Carisoprodol Zopiclone Sentia 3-HO-PCP Snus 5-MeO-DMT Modafinil Sananga Ginseng Green Tea Horny Goat Weed Yerba Mate Cacao DOM Chamomile TMA Hops Mullein Saffron 5-HTP Mad Honey Essential Oils 1cP-LSD
Some of these were definitely scraping the bottom of the barrel but I had to cover them for some sort of completeness (at least in terms of common perception).
Various sections were also substantially expanded, some new segments were added, and a significant number of previous reports were extended/improved or added to. The new page count is 636, making it literally a weighty tome.
More information is available on the book’s website (www.DrugUsersBible.com)or on Amazon (www.amazon.com/dp/0995593698/).
Finally, my 12 year journey has ended, but it isn’t the end of the road. I will continue to ‘research’, to post on parts of social media, and attempt to disseminate harm reduction information wherever and whenever I can. You haven’t heard the last of me.
Regarding the book, I hope it continues to be a useful resource in preventing tragedy, both now and long after I have shuffled off this mortal coil.
Finally, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions or post comments, or most of all, if you ever need help and you think I can assist, drop me a private message. Stay safe.
The last place I visited on my global drug tour (whilst researching for the book) was Freetown Christiania, Denmark. Check it out on Wikipedia or in the book itself. Weed is tolerated there (but not strictly legal) and it is well worth a visit.

WHEN YOUR BODY TELLS YOU TO STOP DOM, also known as 'Serenity, Tranquillity & Peace' (STP), was prominent during the summer of love (1967), although a number of safety concerns did emerge at that time. I'd had it on my wish list for years, when I was suddenly handed a couple of pills by an acquaintance, who unfortunately couldn't remember whether they were dosed at 3mg or 5mg. This sounded a bit dubious but I had it tested to make absolutely sure that it was the real deal, and surprisingly enough, it was.
Given the doubts about the dose, however, I decided to start with half-a-pill; the idea being to take a more respectable dose at a later date. This proved to be a very wise decision.
As the headspace emerged, so did the body high with a very noticeable increase in sex drive (this could clearly be considered to be a chemsex drug). However, this was all accompanied by a tightening of my chest, which soon became the predominant feature.
Another couple of hours passed and this got worse rather than better. On testing I found that my pulse rate and blood pressure were both significantly above normal. This wasn't good. As I felt that I might be heading towards a heart attack I decided to pop a benzo (etizolam).
An hour later I felt a bit better: my chest was returning to normal and my blood pressure and BPM were lower. The intensity of the psychedelic ride was of course falling away too.
The message from my body was clear: don't take the rest of this stuff. I didn't, but I binned it with significant disappointment. I'd really looked forward to this, but it clearly wasn't one for me.
This was another affirmation of the old harm reduction adage: start low; you can always take a higher dose on another date.

A TASTE OF HONEY I hesitate to post this, because I suspect that my younger-self would ignore the words I am about to type. Hopefully you won't.
This is a photo of honey, specifically 'mad honey', and it is indeed psychoactive; but not necessarily in a good way.
Mad honey is produced by the world's biggest bees, via the pollen of a certain type of rhododendron, famously in the mountains of Nepal. For me, the intoxication wasn't particularly nice, and I could clearly sense it would have been worse had I eaten more.
I first heard of this via a YouTube documentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_b2i_FvYPw
If you watch that you will note that a translator poisoned himself and could have perished. The harm reduction point is that he didn't have a bucketful of it, but still ran into serious trouble. With the effective to fatal dose ratio being so low, this is an easy mistake to make.
In all honesty it is one to avoid, despite the possible allure of inebriation from honey.

FOOD FOR ZOMBIES, CHEMSEX DELIGHTS & OTHER MISDEMEANOURS The stronger sister of a-PVP (infamously known as flakka), a-PHP first appeared on the markets circa 2014. Both these compounds are widely known for their association with the gruesome media images of addicted users in various states of incapacitation on the streets of major cities.
For this reason, and the general warnings regarding psychosis, it was one which I approached with particular caution, initially snorting extremely small lines. For the first hour or two this went reasonably well. The sexual payload was obvious and constant, and I gradually approached a state of bliss.
You can probably see the problem here: I didn't want to leave and continued to snort for longer than I should have. I eventually used cannabis to help stem my compulsion, and then etizolam to sleep.
It is clear to see how some people get into serious trouble with this one, as even with a lot of experience I still struggled to stop the binge. It is one I would probably skip, or at the very least, strictly limit your access to a sensible dose if you intend to proceed despite the risks.

A CAFFEINE ALTERNATIVE WITH A KICK Widely used in Africa, kola nut had a definite caffeine-like kick to it, which lasted some hours.
Its taste wasn't so bad, on a scale which has kratom, for example, as one of the most disgusting. However, the powdery constitution of my supply, which failed to dissolve properly, didn't make for a particularly pleasant beverage either.
Perhaps stating the obvious, it isn’t the best idea to consume it at night.

DON'T PUT DRUGS ON TO YOUR EYEBALLS A long time ago I read a forum post written by a fellow who thought that 'eyeballing' was a method of taking drugs, and had actually put some powder into his eyes. Thus, in the first section of The Drug Users Bible, I stated clearly that this was not something you should do... ever. I explained that eyeballing was actually measuring a dose based upon its look, rather than weighing it (which is also a bad idea).
I couldn't believe that I had to write this, but apparently, it was necessary to do so.
You can probably imagine my surprise, therefore, when a few years later I discovered an alleged psychedelic which was in fact administered as an eye drop: sananga. This is made from the roots and bark of an Amazonian shrub (tabernaemontana undulata).
Of course, I had to try it.
Sananga, it is claimed, not only sharpens night vision for hunters, but also "helps to open the inner vision, the third eye, visions, activates the pineal gland...". This and similar references are dotted around the Internet.
I experimented several times to ascertain whether statements like this had any merit. The results were inconclusive. The drops stung and burned, a lot, causing a sort of mild head trauma. I felt a rush of blood to the brain and then experienced a degree of clarity, both in vision and in headspace.
The question is: was there any psychoactivity, or was this simply the normal human effects of the stinging pain and shock?
It could easily have been the latter, as this sort of unpleasant experience does focus the mind rather sharply. It was impossible for me to say with certainty. Also, given that I undertook this experiment in my bedroom, and not in an authentic setting, I don't 100% feel that I gave it a proper shot.
Maybe, if I ever get back to the Amazon, I'll try again in more appropriate circumstances... or maybe not.
In the meantime, I won't be putting anything else into my eyes. :-)

A CHEMICAL MUSHROOM RIDE It is widely stated that 4-ACO-DMT produces an experience which is almost identical to that of psilocybin mushrooms, and this was also my own experience. It started to appear on the markets about 10 years ago, and has become increasingly popular since.
I have sampled it a number of times, using different doses, although thus far I have not sought full immersion (the “Mckenna experience”). I have found it to be less visual than 4-HO-MET, which is related and also fairly popular, but rather, more heady and cerebral.
From a safety perspective, even though the chemical is generally considered to be relatively benign, it is probably a good idea not to overdo it on an initial foray. As a psychedelic it is a real deal, and I would recommend exploring it gradually rather than going crazy from the outset.
